This exploratory study aimed to identify community nurses' understanding of life review as a therapeutic intervention for younger people requiring palliative care. The objectives set out to: (i) Describe the participants' understanding of reminiscence and life review (ii) Detail their current ideas regarding a structured approach to using life review in the community setting. (iii) Outline their understanding of the possible advantages and limitations of life review in relation to palliative care. (iv) Identify future training requirements. ⋯ This study has demonstrated that community nurses are keen to extend the support offered to younger terminally ill people who are in the palliative stage of their illness. Despite having limited knowledge of life the main components and underpinning theory pertaining to life review participants could appreciate the potential of life review as a therapeutic intervention in palliative care and were keen to learn more about its use and gain the necessary knowledge and skills.

This aim of this study was designed to investigate how a select cohort of nursing students experienced their first practice placement in a large Irish teaching hospital. The objectives of this study were to investigate whom do students learn from, what skills they learnt during their first practice placement and to identify if the use of clinical skills laboratories before their first practice placement helped students relate theory to practice during their first practice placement. The aim of this paper is to discuss if the sessions taught in the clinical skills laboratory prior to the first placement helped students integrate theory to practice during their first practice placement. ⋯ Nursing students must be adequately prepared to carry out clinical skills competently and efficiently. Educators and practitioners must display the knowledge and skills required to promote theory-practice integration, to enhance nursing students education, which in turn will optimize high standards of patient care. Relevance to clinical practice. Clinical skills laboratories are essential to help students develop the collaborative skills required for a profession like nursing. It is essential that students are adequately prepared to carry out clinical skills during their first practice placement, and have the ability to link theory to practice.

The purpose of this review was to analyse critically the published research on chest drain removal pain and its management. The findings of descriptive and non-pharmacological intervention studies were summarized and studies of analgesic efficacy were critiqued in depth. ⋯ Analgesic protocols for the management of painful procedures such as chest drain removal are unsatisfactory and practice in this area should be revised. More research is needed to determine the efficacy of drugs other than morphine, particularly Entonox and to investigate multi-modal techniques of management further.

Comparison of hospital and home intravenous antibiotic therapy in adults with cystic fibrosis.
This study aimed to compare home and hospital treatment for clinical outcome and quality of life in adult cystic fibrosis patients receiving i.v. antibiotics for acute respiratory exacerbations. ⋯ If the patient's right to choose where they receive treatment is to be supported, taking into account quality of life further research is required to determine the reasons for home care being less clinically effective in treating acute respiratory exacerbations in cystic fibrosis patients.

The aims of this paper are to present and discuss the findings that emerged from a qualitative study exploring nurses and patients' views of the acute psychiatric ward (the context) and the type of care received (the intervening conditions). ⋯ The findings indicated that the context of the ward environment and the intervening conditions used by nurses in the nursing care of suicidal patients helped to define some of the complex dynamics that impacted on the development of a therapeutic relationship within the practice of suicide-nursing care. Relevance to clinical practice. Environmental factors as well as the nurses' knowledge and skills and the type of support patients receive impact on the care of suicidal patients. These findings could help to enhance and advance suicide-nursing care.
