Observational Study
Impact and safety of open lung biopsy in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).
Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is an inflammatory lung disorder, and its pathological hallmark is diffuse alveolar damage (DAD). Given that open lung biopsy (OLB) can sometimes result in severe side effects, it is rarely performed in patients with ARDS. ⋯ The information provided by OLB performed at the bedside in ARDS patients of unknown etiology could be relevant, as it may optimize treatment. The risk associated with OLB seems to be acceptable.

The Pan-American and Iberian Federation of Critical Medicine and Intensive Therapy, A. C. (FEPIMCTI), has prepared its Strategic Plan for the next 5 years. ⋯ Their main values refer to equity, professionalism, respect and social solidarity. The implementation of the Strategic Plan in a collaborative manner must serve as a driving force for change to position FEPIMCTI as a relevant Scientific Society in the Critical Medicine of its member countries.

Observational Study
Clinical characteristics, prevalence, and factors related to delirium in children of 5 to 14 years of age admitted to intensive care.
To evaluate the clinical characteristics, prevalence and factors associated with delirium in critical patients from 5 to 14 years of age. ⋯ The frequency of delirium and hypoactivity was high. It is therefore necessary to routinely evaluate patients with standardized instruments. All patients presented with important neurocognitive alterations. Several factors related with the physiopathology of delirium were associated to the diagnosis; some of them are modifiable through the rationalization of medical care.
