Angiogenin: a marker for preterm delivery in midtrimester amniotic fluid.
Neovascularization is a response of tissue to ischemic damage. Placental ischemia is thought to underlie a significant portion of preterm deliveries. Our objective was to evaluate whether angiogenin, a potent inducer of neovascularization, is increased in midtrimester amniotic fluid of patients destined to be delivered preterm. ⋯ Midtrimester amniotic fluid angiogenin levels are elevated in patients with preterm delivery. This supports the theory that preexisting intrauterine ischemia and inflammation are important risk factors for preterm delivery and may be already present in the early midtrimester.

Effects of prolonged hypoxemia on fetal renal function and amniotic fluid volume in sheep.
Our purpose was to determine the effects of prolonged hypoxemia on fetal renal function and amniotic fluid volume and composition. ⋯ During prolonged fetal hypoxemia in the absence of acidemia, fetal urine production is maintained, whereas the normal gestational increase in amniotic fluid volume is prevented, raising the possibility that intramembranous reabsorption of amniotic fluid is increased by hypoxemia.

Review Clinical TrialPregnancy outcome after successful external cephalic version for breech presentation at term.
Our purpose was to review the outcome of pregnancies after external cephalic version at term, in particular the incidence and indications of intrapartum cesarean section after successful external cephalic version. ⋯ Pregnancies after a successful external cephalic version at term are not the same as those with cephalic presentation. They are at higher risk of both dystocic labor and fetal distress and therefore require close intrapartum monitoring.

Prospective assessment of pregnancy outcomes after first-trimester exposure to fluconazole.
Our purpose was to study prospectively the pregnancy outcome after first-trimester exposure to fluconazole, an effective antifungal agent teratogenic in animals. ⋯ First-trimester exposure to fluconazole does not appear to increase the prevalence of miscarriages, congenital anomalies, and low birth weight.

Our purpose was to study the relationship between serum relaxin levels and back pain during pregnancy. ⋯ Relaxin is known to remodel pelvic connective tissue in several mammalian species during pregnancy. The current data suggest that relaxin might be involved in the development of pelvic pain in pregnant women.
