To identify nationwide trends and factors associated with advanced imaging (computed tomography [CT] and magnetic resonance imaging [MRI]) use for eye-related emergency department (ED) visits. ⋯ Advanced imaging for eye-related ED visits has escalated at a higher rate than ED visits for eye complaints. Future studies to develop evidence-based algorithms for use of CT/MR imaging for eye complaints that can help balance benefits against financial costs and health risk are warranted.

Prospective, Randomized, Contralateral Eye Comparison of Wavefront-Guided and Wavefront-Optimized Laser in Situ Keratomileusis.
To compare outcomes in wavefront-optimized (WFO) laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) to high-resolution wavefront-guided (WFG) LASIK. ⋯ Wavefront-optimized and high-resolution wavefront-guided LASIK achieve excellent visual outcomes. Nonetheless, treatments based on a high-resolution aberrometer appear to offer superior results in some regards.

The Diagnostic Utility of Multifocal Electroretinography in Detecting Chloroquine and Hydroxychloroquine Retinal Toxicity.
To evaluate multifocal electroretinography (mfERG) as a screening test for detecting hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine toxicity. ⋯ The high sensitivity of parafoveal depression on mfERG and its relationship to cumulative and daily dose illustrates an important role for objective functional testing. The high false-positive rate suggests a potential period where physiologic dysfunction is detected objectively on mfERG before structural change on spectral domain optical coherence tomography.

To assess time requirements for patient encounters and estimate after-hours demands of paper-based clinical workflows in ophthalmology. ⋯ Paper-based documentation takes up a substantial portion of the total time spent for patient care in outpatient ophthalmology clinics but is associated with minimal after-hours work. Understanding paper-based clinical workflows may help inform targeted strategies for improving electronic health record use in ophthalmology.

To determine where glaucoma patients most often fall and how integrated visual field (IVF) damage affects falls rates per year (falls/year) and per step (falls/step) at and away from home. ⋯ In this glaucoma population, most falls occurred at home, and the risk of any step resulting in a fall was higher at home. Those with greater VF damage were more likely to fall for each step taken both at and away from home. Efforts such as home environmental modification should be considered in the visually impaired to prevent falls while maintaining physical activity.
