This study examined the impact of different reporting period lengths on the accuracy of items measuring interference due to pain and fatigue with work, walking, and relations with others. ⋯ Recall ratings with reporting periods of up to a month yield good correspondence with aggregated daily ratings, although the absolute level of the rating will be inflated for recall periods of 3 days or longer.

Health-related quality of life in inflammatory bowel disease measured with the generic 15D instrument.
In many surveys, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has been shown to have a negative impact on health-related quality of life (HRQoL), especially when the disease is active. The purpose of this study was to compare a disease-specific HRQoL tool (Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire, IBDQ) and a generic HRQoL tool (15D) in a large cohort of IBD patients, to assess the ability of the 15D to detect differences in HRQoL between disease states and to compare the HRQoL of IBD patients with that of the general population. ⋯ The 15D was a fast and easy-to-apply method for the examination of HRQoL in IBD patients. In addition to HRQoL studies it could be used in everyday practice as well. Patients with IBD have worse HRQoL than do gender- and age-standardized controls.

Effectiveness of a Tai chi Qigong program in promoting health-related quality of life and perceived social support in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease clients.
This paper evaluates the effectiveness of a 3-month Tai chi Qigong (TCQ) program in promoting the psychosocial functional health of clients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in Hong Kong. ⋯ Tai chi Qigong promoted health outcomes with respect to clients' perception of their respiratory symptoms. Moreover, TCQ decreased disturbances to their physical activities.

Comparative Study
Measurement of quality of life using EQ-5D in patients on prolonged mechanical ventilation: comparison of patients, family caregivers, and nurses.
This study reports how QOL (quality of life) assessments differ between patients on prolonged mechanical ventilation (PMV) and their proxies (family caregivers and nurses). ⋯ QOL assessments from family caregivers agreed more closely with patients than did those from nurses using EQ-5D evaluations for patients with clear cognition, but either proxy was acceptable for rating PMV patients with poor cognition.

An item response analysis of the pediatric PROMIS anxiety and depressive symptoms scales.
The Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) aims to develop self-reported item banks for clinical research. The PROMIS pediatrics (aged 8-17) project focuses on the development of item banks across several health domains (physical function, pain, fatigue, emotional distress, social role relationships, and asthma symptoms). The psychometric properties of the anxiety and depressive symptom item banks are described. ⋯ PROMIS pediatric item banks were developed to provide efficient assessment of health-related quality of life domains. This sample provides initial calibrations of anxiety and depressive symptoms item banks and creates PROMIS pediatric instruments, version 1.0.
