The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between the specific level of knowledge on health and back care-related physical activity practice and exercise with low back pain (LBP) in adolescents. ⋯ High school students have a low level of specific knowledge. Back care education in the school curriculum is recommended.

The prognostic ability of the STarT Back Tool (SBT) reportedly varies, but the factors affecting this are unclear. This study investigated the influences of care setting (chiropractic, GP, physiotherapy, spine centre), episode duration (0-2, 3-4, 4-12, >12 weeks), and outcome time period (3, 6, 12 months) on SBT prognostic ability. ⋯ These results indicate that the prognostic ability of the SBT in these non-stratified care settings was unaffected by care setting on its own. However, the prognosis of patients is affected by diverse clinical characteristics that differ between patient populations, many of which are not assessed by the SBT. When controlling for some of those factors and testing potential interactions, the results showed that only episode duration affected the SBT prognostic ability and, specifically, that the SBT was less predictive in very acute patients (<2 weeks duration).

Burden of disease of reoperations in instrumental spinal surgeries in Germany.
To estimate the incidence of instrumental spinal surgeries (ISS) and consecutive reoperations and to calculate the related resource utilization and costs. ⋯ Costs of ISS and subsequent reoperations have a significant impact on health insurances budgets. The annual cost of reoperations exceeds the direct cost of the primary surgery driven by the need for further inpatient and outpatient care.

Though rare, intracranial complications have been reported as a result from spinal surgery. Most if not all of these are a result of intracranial hypotension from durotomy and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak. We aimed to characterize these complications across a large postoperative population at our institution. ⋯ Intracranial complications from spinal surgery are a rare event. We demonstrate an incidence of 0.4% of total intracranial pathology after spinal surgery. A strong clinical suspicion must be maintained after durotomy or CSF leak due to these infrequent but potentially life-threatening complications.

Current solutions for navigated spine surgery remain hampered by restrictions in surgical workflow as well as a limited versatility and applicability. Against this background, we report the first experience of navigated spinal instrumentation with the mobile AIRO(®) intraoperative computed tomography (iCT) scanner. ⋯ The AIRO(®) system is an easy-to-use and versatile iCT for navigated spinal instrumentation and provides high pedicle screw accuracy rates. Although the authors' experience suggests that the learning curve associated with AIRO(®)-based spinal navigation is steep, a systematic user-based approach to the technology is required.
