To investigate associations between muscle size, fat infiltration (FI), and global sagittal alignment in patients with adult spinal deformity (ASD). ⋯ In ASD patients, global sagittal malalignment is related to FI of the PVM throughout the lumbar and thoracic spine, as identified through CT. Future research should investigate how FI relates to ASD pathogenesis.

Vertebral endplate bone marrow lesions ("Modic changes", MC) are associated with chronic low back pain (CLBP). Bone marrow composition in MC is poorly understood. The goals of this study were to: (1) measure bone marrow fat fraction (BMF) in CLBP patients with MC using water-fat MRI and (2) assess the relationship between BMF measurements and patient-reported clinical characteristics. ⋯ BMF is significantly altered in MC. Water-fat MRI enables BMF measurements that may eventually form the basis for quantitative assessments of MC severity and progression.

Observational Study
Assessing the cone of economy in patients with spinal disease using only a force plate: an observational retrospective cohort study.
This is a retrospective cohort with multiple regression modeling. ⋯ Cone of economy was estimated from force plate data using center of pressure with high correlation without the use of motion capture in healthy controls and a variety of spine patients. This could lower the entry burden for measurement of the CoE in patients, enabling widespread use. This would provide surgeons objective global balance data, along with Haddas' CoE classification system, that could assist with surgical decision-making and facilitate objective monitoring surgical outcomes.

Although signal intensity on T2W axial images is sensitive in detection of fatty infiltration to assess paraspinal muscle degeneration, it is affected by inhomogeneities of magnetic fields and individual variabilities. The purpose of this study was to propose reference adjusted signal measures on T2W axial images and determine their capacities in reflecting age-related lumbar paraspinal muscle degeneration. ⋯ On routine T2W axial MR images the adjusted signal measurements using an internal reference of CSF or canal can better reflect age-related degenerative changes in the paraspinal muscles.

We investigated the prevalence of Modic changes (MCs) and associated pathologies in pediatric patients. ⋯ Diagnostic: individual l cross-sectional studies with consistently applied reference standard and blinding.
