The association between vertebral endplate structural defects and back pain: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
To clarify the current state of knowledge on the association of endplate structural defects and back pain. ⋯ Overall, there is moderate quality evidence of an association between back pain and endplate structural defects, which is most evident for erosion, sclerosis and Schmorl's nodes. Going forward, research on specific endplate defect phenotypes and back pain case definitions using strong study designs will be important in clarifying the extent of associations and underlying mechanisms. The study was prospectively registered in Prospero (CRD42020170835) on 02/24/2020.

This study aims to determine whether outcomes following vertebroplasty with high viscosity cement are superior to low viscosity cement and non-inferior to kyphoplasty in the setting of vertebral compression fractures. ⋯ The present network meta-analysis demonstrated that HVCV may be associated with lower risk of cement leakage among patients with VCFs as compared to other augmentation techniques. Future prospective studies will validate the findings of this analysis and further elucidate the risk of symptomatic cement leakage.

Does prophylactic vertebral augmentation reduce the refracture rate in osteoporotic vertebral fracture patients: a meta-analysis.
In order to prevent the recurrent fracture after vertebral augmentation, the concept of prophylactic vertebral augmentation has been proposed, but its efficacy is still controversial. This study aimed to determine the efficacy of prophylactic vertebral augmentation for prevention of refracture in osteoporotic vertebral fracture patients. ⋯ The current evidence suggested that prophylactic vertebral augmentation might not be appropriate to diminish the risk of new VCF. Therefore, there is a need to investigate the mechanism of refracture and explore other preventive regimens to reduce the risk.
