This study aimed to establish a nomogram to predict the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE), identifying potential risk factors, and providing theoretical basis for prevention of VTE after spinal surgery. ⋯ Patients undergoing spinal surgery with elevated D-dimer levels, prolonger surgical, and cervical surgery have higher risk of VTE. The nomogram can provide a theoretical basis for clinicians to prevent VTE.

In this study, we analyzed the use of a validated capture system (Spinal Adverse Events Severity system, SAVES V2) as a first non-technical skill to properly face the relevant problem of surgical complications (SCs) and adverse events (AEs) in spinal surgery. ⋯ Considering that the rate of AEs and SCs in spinal surgery is still high despite the improvement of technical skills, we suggest the use of SAVES V2 capture system as a first-line tool to face the problem.

Cervical sagittal alignment is essential, and there is considerable debate as to what constitutes physiological sagittal alignment. The purpose of this study was to identify constant parameters for characterizing cervical sagittal alignment under physiological conditions. ⋯ In the asymptomatic population, the C4 vertebral body maintains a constant slope angle under physiological conditions. The novel concept of C4 as a constant vertebra would provide a vital benchmark for diagnosing pathological sagittal alignment abnormalities and planning the surgical reconstruction of cervical lordosis.

This study aims to delineate the three-dimensional (3D) SPACE MRI findings of the transverse ligament (TL) in whiplash-associated disorder (WAD) patients, and to compare them with those from a nontraumatic group. ⋯ High-grade morphological changes in the TL can be detected in patients with WAD through the use of 3D SPACE sequences. Clinical relevance statement 3D SPACE MRI could serve as an instrumental tool in the assessment of TL among patients with WAD. Integrating MRI findings with patient history and symptomology could facilitate the identification of potential ligament damage, and may help treatment and follow-up planning.

It is unknown whether presence of pre-operative objective functional impairment (OFI) can predict post-operative outcomes in patients with lumbar disc herniation (LDH). We aimed to determine whether pre-operative OFI measured by the five-repetition sit-to-stand test (5R-STS) could predict outcomes at 12-months post-discectomy. ⋯ The presence of OFI based on 5R-STS time does not appear to decrease a patient's likelihood of experiencing satisfactory post-operative outcomes. The 5R-STS cannot predict how a patient with LDH will respond to surgery at 12-month follow-up.
