Corrective long spinal fusion is a widely accepted surgical method for patients with adult spinal deformities. However, instrumented long fusion is associated with a significant risk of complications. Therefore, we aimed to assess the success of short-segment spinal fusion, particularly for bone marrow edema (BME) adjacent to the vertebral endplate, in patients with low back pain (LBP) and spinal deformity. ⋯ Short-segment spinal fusion is effective for treating LBP and spinal deformity with BME adjacent to the vertebral endplate without spinal correction.

Anterior (ALIF) and transforaminal (TLIF) lumbar interbody fusion have shown similar clinical outcomes at short- and medium-term follow-ups. Possible advantages of ALIF in the long run could be better disc height and lumbar lordosis and reduced risk of adjacent segment disease. We aimed to study if ALIF could be associated with superior clinical outcomes than TLIF at long-term follow-up. ⋯ Diagnostic: individual cross-sectional studies with the consistently applied reference standard and blinding.

The overwhelming inflammatory response plays a critical role in the secondary injury cascade of traumatic spinal cord injury (tSCI). The systemic immune inflammatory index (SII) and systemic inflammatory response index (SIRI) are two novel inflammatory biomarkers. The SII was calculated based on lymphocyte, neutrophil, and platelet counts, while the SIRI was calculated based on lymphocyte, neutrophil, and monocyte counts. Their prognostic value in patients with tSCI remains unclear. ⋯ Increased SII was independently associated with a decreased likelihood of improved AIS grade conversion.

To investigate the clinical application value of the non-shared incentive diffusion imaging technique (ZOOM-DWI) diagnoses of cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM). ⋯ Cervical ZOOM-DWI can be applied to diagnose CSM, and spinal ADC value can use as reliable imaging data for diagnosing cervical myelopathy.

A recent study reported a 34% mid-term revision rate after M6-C™ cervical total disc replacement (CTDR) for wear-related osteolysis. Here, we aim to investigate the prevalence, risk factors, and radiographic characteristics of periprosthetic bony changes and implant failure of the M6-C™ artificial disc. ⋯ We report a lower reoperation rate for failed M6-C™ implants than previously published, but confirmed that osteolysis and heterotopic ossification are common following CTDR with the M6-C™ and may be asymptomatic. Therefore, we strongly recommend ongoing clinical and radiographic monitoring after CTDR with the M6-C™, particularly for male patients implanted at the C5/6 level.
