How, when, and why individuals with stage IV cancer seen in an outpatient setting are referred to palliative care: a mixed methods study.
Early palliative care (PC) for individuals with advanced cancer improves patient and family outcomes and experience. However, it is unknown when, why, and how in an outpatient setting individuals with stage IV cancer are referred to PC. ⋯ We found high rates of use and appreciation of PC. However, interviews revealed that exclusively focusing on rates of referrals may obscure how referrals vary in timing, reason for referral, and usefulness to patients, families, and clinical teams.

Effect of serum uric acid level and Multinational Association for Supportive Care in Cancer risk score on febrile neutropenia mortality.
The study was aimed to evaluate the effect of uric acid (UA) on the 30-day mortality of patients admitted to the tertiary referral hospital with a complaint of febrile neutropenia (FEN). The secondary aim was to evaluate the use of combining serum UA levels with the Multinational Association for Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC) risk score. ⋯ Increased level of UA at the time of FEN diagnosis was independently associated with an increased rate of 30-day mortality of FEN. The combination of the MASCC risk score and serum UA level might thoroughly predict the 30-day mortality of FEN.

Maximal cardiopulmonary exercise testing in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia survivors exposed to chemotherapy.
The purpose of this study was to demonstrate if childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) survivors exposed to chemotherapy (i.e., doxorubicin) are able to achieve a safe maximal cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET). ⋯ Childhood ALL survivors with prior exposure to chemotherapy can achieve a safe maximal CPET. They were able of achieving a maximal exercise test without being limited by symptoms, potential overprotection, or musculoskeletal issues. Thus, it should be the norm to realize a CPET prior a physical activity program to propose an optimal prescription. This study provides important information regarding the maximal physiological parameters that childhood ALL survivors are able to reach and have important clinical implications in the exercise and oncology field for this population of survivors.

Cisplatin-associated neuropathy characteristics compared with those associated with other neurotoxic chemotherapy agents (Alliance A151724).
The current project was developed to obtain natural history information regarding cisplatin-induced peripheral neuropathy in males with testicular/germ cell cancers and to compare such neuropathy data with similarly obtained data in patients receiving other chemotherapy drugs in similarly conducted clinical trials. ⋯ Understanding neuropathy similarities and differences with various chemotherapy agents may help elucidate CIPN processes and facilitate means to prevent and/or treat established CIPN.
