ReviewMRI-detected subchondral bone marrow signal alterations of the knee joint: terminology, imaging appearance, relevance and radiological differential diagnosis.
To discuss terminology, radiological differential diagnoses and significance of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-detected subchondral bone marrow lesions (BMLs) of the knee joint. ⋯ Different entities of subchondral BMLs that are of relevance in the context of OA research may be distinguished by specific imaging findings, patient characteristics, symptoms, and history and are discussed in this review.

Racial differences in self-reported pain and function among individuals with radiographic hip and knee osteoarthritis: the Johnston County Osteoarthritis Project.
This study compared pain and function among African Americans and Caucasian with radiographic hip and/or knee osteoarthritis (OA), controlling for radiographic severity and other patient characteristics. ⋯ Among participants with knee OA, racial differences in pain and function may be explained by BMI and depressive symptoms, and racial differences in function may also be largely influenced by pain. Improving management of weight and depressive symptoms may be key steps toward reducing racial disparities in knee OA symptoms.

Prevalence of radiographic knee osteoarthritis and its association with knee pain in the elderly of Japanese population-based cohorts: the ROAD study.
We investigated the prevalence of radiographic knee osteoarthritis (OA) and knee pain in the Japanese elderly using a large-scale population of a nationwide cohort study, Research on Osteoarthritis Against Disability (ROAD), and examined their association. ⋯ The present cross-sectional study revealed a high prevalence of radiographic knee OA in the Japanese elderly. Knee pain was strongly associated with JSN especially in men, while women tended to have knee pain even without radiographic OA.
