Meta AnalysisInfluence of flare design on symptomatic efficacy of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in osteoarthritis: a meta-analysis of randomized placebo-controlled trials.
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs' (NSAIDs) symptomatic efficacy in osteoarthritis (OA) is often assessed in trials with a "flare design", i.e., including only patients with an increase in their pain after stopping their usual treatment (NSAIDs or analgesic). ⋯ Our study suggests that the flare design used in clinical trials evaluating NSAIDs results in a treatment effect of higher magnitude. These results should be considered when designing a trial and/or interpreting the results of a trial.

ReviewA systematic review of radiographic definitions of foot osteoarthritis in population-based studies.
To identify the methods used in population-based epidemiological studies to diagnose radiographic foot osteoarthritis (OA) and to estimate the population prevalence of radiographic foot OA. ⋯ There are comparatively few studies examining radiographic foot OA. Existing studies mainly focus on the first MTP joint and use the K&L grading system. Future studies are needed to quantify the prevalence of radiographic OA at the different joint complexes within the foot.

Evaluating the responsiveness of the ICOAP following hip or knee replacement.
The Intermittent and Constant Osteoarthritis (OA) Pain (ICOAP) questionnaire evaluates the constructs of 'intermittent'(tm) and 'constant'(tm) pain. Theses are conceptually different from 'pain on activity'(tm) and pain 'intensity'(tm) as measured by the WOMAC and Chronic Pain Grade (CPG), measures commonly used in OA. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the responsiveness of the ICOAP, and different pain constructs in primary total hip (THR) and total knee (TKR) replacement. ⋯ Multi-faceted constructs of pain are effectively relieved through joint replacement and all measures including the ICOAP demonstrated responsiveness.
