The multidimensionality of sleep quality and its relationship to fatigue in older adults with painful osteoarthritis.
To evaluate subjective sleep quality and its relationship to fatigue in older adults with osteoarthritis (OA). ⋯ Among older people with OA, poor sleep is highly prevalent and significantly linked with fatigue. Identifying the nature of sleep disturbances in OA is important as treatment of sleep disturbances may reduce OA-related fatigue.

Inhibition of osteoclasts prevents cartilage loss and pain in a rat model of degenerative joint disease.
To investigate the relationship between efficacy of a bisphosphonate, pain and extent of joint damage in the monosodium iodoacetate (MIA) model of painful degenerative joint disease. ⋯ Subchondral bone remodeling plays an important role in nociception and the pathobiology of the MIA model with osteoclasts being implicated in both bone and cartilage resorption. Inhibition of osteoclastic activity when initiated early leads to improved efficacy.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyEfficacy of patient education and supervised exercise vs patient education alone in patients with hip osteoarthritis: a single blind randomized clinical trial.
To compare the efficacy of patient education and supervised exercise with that of patient education alone for the management of pain in patients with hip osteoarthritis (OA). ⋯ The study could not demonstrate a significant difference in pain reduction over time between PE+SE vs PE alone. Adding SE to PE may improve physical function, but the magnitude of possible benefit is unknown as the 95% confidence intervals around the mean difference were wide.

Association of radiographic and symptomatic knee osteoarthritis with health-related quality of life in a population-based cohort study in Japan: the ROAD study.
Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a major public health issue causing chronic pain and disability. However, there is little information on the impact of this disease on quality of life (QOL) in Japanese men and women. The objective of the present study was to clarify the impact of radiographic and symptomatic knee OA on QOL in Japan. ⋯ This cross-sectional study revealed that subjects with symptomatic knee OA had significantly lower physical QOL than subjects without it.

Meta AnalysisInfluence of flare design on symptomatic efficacy of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in osteoarthritis: a meta-analysis of randomized placebo-controlled trials.
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs' (NSAIDs) symptomatic efficacy in osteoarthritis (OA) is often assessed in trials with a "flare design", i.e., including only patients with an increase in their pain after stopping their usual treatment (NSAIDs or analgesic). ⋯ Our study suggests that the flare design used in clinical trials evaluating NSAIDs results in a treatment effect of higher magnitude. These results should be considered when designing a trial and/or interpreting the results of a trial.
