Perioperative hyperfractionated high-dose rate brachytherapy for the treatment of soft tissue sarcomas: multicentric experience.
Low-dose rate brachytherapy is a well-established adjuvant treatment for soft tissue sarcomas (STS). The experience with high-dose rate brachytherapy (HDR BT) in this indication is limited. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the viability of perioperative hyperfractionated HDR BT for STS. ⋯ Our study suggests that perioperative HDR BT is a promising method for achieving high biological doses with good LC in the postoperative radiotherapy of STS and that combination of BT and EBRT provides better tumor control than BT alone.

A comparative study of antiviral therapy after resection of hepatocellular carcinoma in the immune-active phase of hepatitis B virus infection.
The role of antiviral therapy for patients in the immune-active phase of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection who underwent partial hepatectomy for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is unknown. ⋯ Although nucleoside analogs did not reduce short-term recurrence rate, they promoted postoperative viral clearance and increased residual liver volume, which significantly enhanced tolerance to subsequent therapy for disease recurrence.

Sentinel lymph node dissection in primary melanoma reduces subsequent regional lymph node metastasis as well as distant metastasis after nodal involvement.
In many countries sentinel lymph node dissection (SLND) followed by complete lymphadenectomy if positive is routinely performed treatment for primary cutaneous melanoma. However, the potential survival benefit of SLND is still controversial. ⋯ SLND reduced subsequent regional lymph node metastases and improved disease-free survival, while overall survival remained unaffected. SLND reduced distant metastases and improved overall survival in the subgroups of patients with regional lymph node involvement.

Chordoma of the mobile spine and sacrum: a retrospective analysis of a series of patients surgically treated at two referral centers.
Chordoma is a rare tumor, and its natural history is still not well known. ⋯ Tumor size and surgical margins affected outcome only on initial presentation. However, wide surgery was feasible in a minority of cases. Most patients died of local-regional disease even when metastases occurred. Indeed, long-term prognosis was such that disease-free survival at 10 years was only 26%.

Whether laparoscopic gastrectomy affects the number of gastric cancer cells exfoliated from the cancer-invaded serosa remains unclear. This study aimed to compare the detection rate of free gastric cancer cells in the peritoneal cavity during laparoscopic and open gastrectomy. ⋯ The laparoscopic techniques used in gastric cancer surgery did not increase the detection rate of free cancer cells in the peritoneal cavity compared with conventional techniques.
