The possible negative effects of smoking on postoperative outcomes have not been well studied in cancer patients. ⋯ Prior and current smoking status is a significant risk factor for major postoperative complications and mortality following GI cancer and thoracic operations in veterans. Smoking cessation should be encouraged prior to all major cancer surgery in the VA population to decrease postoperative complications and length of stay.

Data from patients with colorectal liver metastases (CRLM) who received neoadjuvant chemotherapy before resection were reviewed and evaluated to see whether neoadjuvant chemotherapy influences the predictive outcome of R1 resections (margin is 0 mm) in patients with CRLM. ⋯ In patients treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy, R1 resection was of no predictive value for DFS and OS.
