Multicenter Study Clinical Trial
[Characteristics of patients and use of resource in French pediatric intensive care units. Le groupe francophone de Rèanimation et urgences pédiatriques].
Evaluation of case-mix and resource consumption in pediatric intensive care units (ICU) is required. ⋯ The results of this study can be used for interinstitutional comparison and a broader appraisal of pediatric intensive care. They illustrate the relationship between severity of illness and resource consumption. French pediatric ICU efficiency seems to be high, as compared to North American and Dutch results.

Recurrent pyogenic granuloma with multiple satellite lesions is a rare and benign condition; its diagnosis may be clinically evoked from a characteristic natural history. ⋯ Our two cases completely fit with the classical features of such a condition that generally clears spontaneously. This syndrome must be known because of its "pseudo-metastatic" clinical features, which may mislead the physician.

This study was designed to validate a behavioral acute pain rating scale for term and preterm neonates (APN). ⋯ This behavioral acute pain rating scale for newborns demonstrated a good specificity and sensitivity, internal consistency and inter-rater reliability. This scale could be used to test the analgesic effects of different therapies during painful procedures.

A European Concerted Action, Euronic, has been set up to study the attitudes and self-reported practices of the staff working in neonatal intensive care units about parent's information and ethical decisionmaking. This paper presents the results of a preliminary qualitative survey conducted in two French units and including 23 physicians and nurses. The answers indicate that withdrawal of treatments are part of their practices. ⋯ Nurses consider that they are more emotionally involved with the baby and the parents. They express concerns about painful treatments and life-prolonging therapies. Most respondents believe that an ethical committee would be of little help in the decision-making process and that the actual legislation should not be modified as it gives obligation for more in-depth consideration of each case.

Burn injury is considered by children as one of the most painful traumas (just after bone factures). Burn pain in children can and must be controlled as well as for adult patients, with almost identical techniques. ⋯ Due to very high levels of nociception, satisfactory management of procedural pain requires the use of opioid therapy. Non pharmacological methods are meaningless if pharmacological treatment is not optimal.
