To evaluate the toxicity of liquid detergent capsules for children. ⋯ The effects observed with liquid detergent capsules were very similar to those resulting from exposure to other detergents. However, exposure to these agents are very frequent and often results in eye contact, which may be responsible for keratitis, and after ingestion detergent inhalation is a possible complication. All cases with eye symptoms or cough after liquid detergent capsule exposure deserve prompt medical examination and assistance. Greater awareness of both health professionals and consumers on the dangers and risks of these laundry detergent pods is required for better treatment of exposure accidents and for their prevention.

Thiamine deficiency is recognized in varied parts of the world. In Asia, it remains an important public health problem where highly polished rice is the major staple food and where other primary dietary sources of thiamine are in short supply. Beriberi, or clinically apparent thiamine deficiency, may present a variety of syndromes including myocardial dysfunction or wet beriberi, dry beriberi with neurological symptoms, and the more severe form Shoshin beriberi with cardiac failure and lactic acidosis. ⋯ We report the case of a 10-week-old girl, admitted with diarrhea, vomiting, acidosis, and cardiac failure. After excluding other etiologies of cardiomyopathy, biochemical thiamine deficiency confirmed the diagnosis of beriberi in an infant of a thiamine-deficient mother from Reunion Island, a French island where recently, with Mayotte Island, epidemic cases of beriberi have been described. This case is important to highlight the manifestations in young infants and to alert physicians to the possibility of thiamine deficiency in developed countries.

The Script Concordance Test (SCT) is a tool used to evaluate clinical reasoning in complex medical situations. Our aim was to create the first SCT in pediatric gastroenterology in order to objectively assess medical students. We elaborated a SCT including 31 items divided into ten clinical cases. ⋯ This was the first time the students had taken a SCT, but they considered that this tool was appropriate and in concordance with the objectives. Although the SCT is a useful method, its elaboration can be difficult. It seems important to create a group of teachers to validate the process and eliminate the wide variability.

We used data from the Groupe de pathologie infectieuse pédiatrique and Association clinique et thérapeutique infantile du Val-de-Marne (GPIP/ACTIV) National Survey of Bacterial Meningitis in children and the National Reference Center for Meningococci (CNRM) microbiological data to assess the potential impact of corticosteroids on the immediate management of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) associated with different genotypes, including highly pro-inflammatory strains of the ST-11 clonal complex (genotype ST-11). ⋯ This study indicates that in the absence of corticosteroids, higher mortality in invasive meningococcal disease is associated with the ST-11 clonal complex strains. This suggests a possible positive effect of corticosteroid therapy depending on the genotype of the strain involved.

The clinical aspects of neonatal cerebral venous thrombosis are polymorphic in their mode of onset, making diagnosis difficult. Transfontanellar ultrasound allows for the morphological and vascular exploration of intracranial contents. ⋯ Transfontanellar ultrasound has a variable sensitivity for the detection of thrombus, but it remains the first-line examination before any additional secondary exploration. The early diagnosis of neonatal cerebral venous thrombosis with transfontanellar ultrasound requires the implementation of emergency treatment.
