Ischemic strokes represent a rare condition in childhood, mostly revealed by a motor deficit. In the pediatric age, strokes are different than in adulthood where atherosclerosis is the major cause. The etiologies of stroke in childhood are rather multiple and each of them is rare. ⋯ The aim of this presentation is to propose a diagnosis strategy for ischemic strokes in children. An extensive search should be performed in every children presenting a stroke episode even if the initial outcome appears favorable. Such investigations could improve our understanding and therapeutic strategies of stroke in childhood, a condition where the cognitive and functional prognosis can be severely compromised.

Several recent French studies have revealed that 40% of death in pediatric intensive care units are associated with withdrawal or limitation of life saving treatments. Because such decisions are common, the Groupe francophone de réanimation et urgences pédiatriques (GFRUP) has decided to publish recommendations in order to help paediatricians dealing with those difficult issues and to improve their decisions. In a first part of the document the ethical principles that imply those guidelines are recalled, followed by definitions of the terms currently employed. The second part contains guidelines regarding decision making process, the way it is applied and organisation of relatives as well as paramedical and medical staff support when the death of a child occurs.

Lung scintigraphy provides a regional, functional test of pulmonary ventilation and perfusion. It allows an early detection of pulmonary damage or dysfonction, in particular in cystic fibrosis (CF) and other chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in childhood. ⋯ Lung scintigraphy allows early detection of local pulmonary abnormalities, sometimes undetectable with a chest X-ray or even with a chest tomodensitometry. It can reveal bronchial obstructive plugs, avoiding thus the development of bronchectasies thanks to a quick suitable treatment.
