Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyDo Patients of Subspecialist Physicians Benefit from Written Asthma Action Plans?
Asthma clinical guidelines suggest written asthma action plans are essential for improving self-management and outcomes. ⋯ Our results suggest that using a written asthma action plan form as a vehicle for providing asthma management instructions to patients with persistent asthma who are receiving subspecialty care for the first time confers no added benefit beyond subspecialty-based medical care and education for asthma. Clinical trial registered with www.clinicaltrials.gov (NCT 00149461).

Multicenter Study Observational StudyIndications and Effects of Plasma Transfusions in Critically Ill Children.
Plasma transfusions are frequently prescribed for critically ill children, although their indications lack a strong evidence base. Plasma transfusions are largely driven by physician conceptions of need, and these are poorly documented in pediatric intensive care patients. ⋯ One-third of transfused patients were not bleeding and had no planned procedure. In addition, in most patients, coagulation tests are not sensitive to increases in coagulation factors resulting from plasma transfusion. Studies assessing appropriate plasma transfusion strategies are urgently needed.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyBudesonide/Formoterol for Bronchiolitis Obliterans After Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation.
Systemic steroids are the standard treatment for bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (BOS) after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) despite their poor efficacy and disabling side effects. ⋯ Budesonide/formoterol administration led to a significant improvement in the FEV1 in patients with mild/severe BOS after allogeneic HSCT. Clinical trial registered with www.clinicaltrials.gov (NCT00624754).
