Background and Objectives: High rates of infection with Toxoplasma gondii were found in psychiatric patients globally. In this study, we assessed for the first time the prevalence of T. gondii infection in psychiatric patients and healthy individuals with no known psychiatric disorders in Western Romania. ⋯ Our results revealed a significantly higher prevalence of T. gondii antibodies among patients with schizophrenia (69.77%), organic (personality and behaviour) disorders (76.74%), and mental disorders concerning alcohol abuse (84.62%), compared with the control group (p = 0.009, p = 0.005, p = 0.043, respectively). Conclusions: This study provides new and important information on the seroprevalence of T. gondii in Romanian psychiatric patients and may serve for further scientific research regarding the status of T. gondii infection in patients with psychiatric disorders.

Pembrolizumab-Related Side Effects: Acute Renal Failure and Severe Neurological Toxicity.
Immunotherapy with immune checkpoint inhibitors represents nowadays a marked improvement in cancer treatment. Nevertheless, they can cause severe toxicities that put the patient at high risk, often requiring aggressive treatment. ⋯ Her array of symptoms, which presented a few days after last drug administration, consisted of severe neurological deficit, severe renal failure, polymyositis, and hyperthyroidism. Treatment required the immediate interruption of the trigger drug, infusion of high dose steroids, renal replacement therapy, plasmapheresis, and methimazole, as will be further discussed.

Background and Objectives: Lymphedema is an important and underestimated condition, and this progressive chronic disease has serious implications on patients' quality of life. The main goal of research would be to prevent lymphedema, instead of curing it. Patients receiving radiotherapy after lymph node dissection have a significantly higher risk of developing lymphedema. ⋯ In particular, we observed no increase in limb diameter measured at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months postoperatively. Conclusion: In our experience, performing LVA after axillary or groin lymphadenectomy and after adjuvant radiotherapy, and distally to the irradiated area, allows us to ensure the long-term patency of anastomoses in order to obtain the best results in terms of reducing the risk of iatrogenic lymphedema. This preliminary report is encouraging, and the adoption of our approach should be considered in selected patients.

Introduction: The authors review their experience in transoral laryngeal microsurgery (TLM) that they performed with two different CO2 laser devices from the same company, which were both equipped with a micromanipulator and digital scanner. Material and Methods: A total of 91 glottic and glotto-supraglottic cancers were treated during the years 2009-2016 and then analyzed in relation to the laser performances and the long-term oncologic results. Results: Laser devices proved to be very efficient and the UP mode was confirmed to be the best in terms of cutting precision and lowest thermal damage. Conclusions: CO2 laser TLM is the preferred option for the majority of small-medium size glottic and supraglottic cancers and may also be used for bigger tumors, especially in older patients.

Background and Objectives: Assessment of RANTES level and concentrations of inflammatory cytokines: programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1), interferon gamma IFN-γ, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), transforming growht factor β (TGF-β) (and angiogenesis factors: vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A) and vascular endothelial growth factor C (VEGF C) in tumor and margin tissues of colorectal cancer (CRC,) and evaluation of RANTES influence on histopathological parameters (microvessel density (MVD), budding, tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs)), in relation to patients' clinical features. Materials and Methods: The study used 49 samples of tumor and margin tissues derived from CRC patients. To determinate the concentration of RANTES, PD-L1, IFN-γ, TNF-α, TGF-β, VEGF-A, and VEGF-C, we used the commercially available enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit. ⋯ Conclusions: RANTES activity might be associated with angiogenesis, lymphogenesis, and immune escape in CRC. RANTES is an important chemokine that is a part of the chemokine-cytokine network involved in the modulation of TME composition in CRC. Further research may verify which processes are responsible for the associations observed in the study.
