Background and Objectives: The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate a deep learning model capable of autonomously detecting and segmenting radiolucent lesions in the lower jaw by utilizing You Only Look Once (YOLO) v8. Materials and Methods: This study involved the analysis of 226 lesions present in panoramic radiographs captured between 2013 and 2023 at the Clinical Hospital Dubrava and the School of Dental Medicine, University of Zagreb. Panoramic radiographs included radiolucent lesions such as radicular cysts, ameloblastomas, odontogenic keratocysts (OKC), dentigerous cysts and residual cysts. ⋯ Augmentation techniques led to an improvement of these scores to 100%, 94.5%, 96.6% and 72.2%. Conclusions: Our study confirmed that the model developed using the advanced YOLOv8 has the remarkable capability to automatically detect and segment radiolucent lesions in the mandible. With its continual evolution and integration into various medical fields, the deep learning model holds the potential to revolutionize patient care.

Thermography provides non-invasive, radiation-free diagnostic imaging. Despite the extensive literature on medical thermography, a comprehensive overview of current applications is lacking. Hence, the aim of this scoping review is to identify the medical applications of passive infrared thermography and to catalogue the technical and environmental modalities. ⋯ The use of several camera models from various manufacturers is described. These and other facts and figures are compiled and presented in a detailed, descriptive tabular and visual format. Thermography offers promising diagnostic capabilities, alone or in addition to conventional methods.

Acupuncture for Japanese Katakori (Chronic Neck Pain): A Randomized Placebo-Controlled Double-Blind Study.
Background and Objectives: Although acupuncture is listed as a beneficial treatment for neck/shoulder stiffness, which has increased with the spread of information technology, to date, evidence of its efficacy under double-blind conditions has not been shown. This study aimed to assess whether acupuncture treatment with superficial skin piercing is superior to placebo treatment. Materials and Methods: A randomized, double-blind (practitioner-patient) placebo-controlled trial was performed at a single center with four arms (ISRCTN76896018). ⋯ Only genuine acupuncture involves the specific effects of needle insertion into the body. The acupuncture ritual had a significant impact on the subjective improvement of neck/shoulder stiffness; however, improvement with ritual alone versions of placebo acupuncture was not maintained as with superficial skin piercing. Our study provides important evidence of acupuncture efficacy and information regarding inert no-touch placebo control in acupuncture research.

Background and Objectives: According to the modified Williams theory, the shape of the maxillary central incisor corresponds to the shape of the maxillary alveolar ridge (dental arch) and the shape of the face. Moreover, the standards of beauty suggest that the center of the face of an individual with a full set of teeth should match the center of the maxillary and mandibular dental arches. The purpose of this study is to conduct a comparative cross-sectional study on the matching of the shape of the face, maxillary central incisor and maxillary dental arch as well as the matching of the midfacial line and dental arches in subjects with complete dentition. ⋯ Conclusions: The modified Williams theory was confirmed in most subjects, thus it can be considered a relevant guideline when determining the shape of teeth after their loss. The highest percentage of matching in both sexes was with the shape of the face and dental arch. There was no positive correlation between the middle of the maxillary and mandibular dental arch in most cases.

Background and Objectives: Remimazolam is a new ultrashort-acting benzodiazepine anesthetic. Remimazolam appears to be useful in patients with severe valvular disease because of its minimal cardiovascular impact. In this retrospective case series study, we assessed the efficacy and safety of remimazolam for maintaining hemodynamic stability during anesthetic induction and maintenance. ⋯ There was no significant change in the cardiac index (2.0 [1.8, 2.4] vs. 1.9 [1.8, 2.3], p = 0.57642) or pulse rate (73.5 ± 8.85 vs. 74.7 ± 11.7, mean ± SD, p = 0.0876) during anesthetic induction with remimazolam. All patients underwent MitraClip without major hemodynamic concerns, with no or small increases in inotropes. Conclusions: Remimazolam may be used safely in patients with severe mitral regurgitation and low left ventricular function presenting with heart failure.
