Evaluating the Effectiveness of Proton Beam Therapy Compared to Conventional Radiotherapy in Non-Metastatic Rectal Cancer: A Systematic Review of Clinical Outcomes.
Background and Objectives: Conventional radiotherapies used in the current management of rectal cancer commonly cause iatrogenic radiotoxicity. Proton beam therapy has emerged as an alternative to conventional radiotherapy with the aim of improving tumour control and reducing off-set radiation exposure to surrounding tissue. However, the real-world treatment and oncological outcomes associated with the use of proton beam therapy in rectal cancer remain poorly characterised. ⋯ Pooled analyses of dosimetric studies highlight greater predicted radiation-sparing effects with proton beam therapy in this setting. This evidence, however, is based on evidence at a moderate risk of bias and clinical heterogeneity. Overall, more robust, prospective clinical trials are required.

Background and Objectives: The saphenous vein graft (SVG) remains the most frequently used conduit worldwide, despite its common disadvantage of early graft failure. To solve the problem and reduce the SVG damage, Souza implemented a new technique where a vein is harvested with surrounding fascia and fat tissue (the so-called no-touch technique). Materials and Methods. ⋯ According to multi-slice CT coronary angiography, the results were impeccable, with an astonishing 100% patency observed in all 20 IMA grafts and 58 no-touch SVGs examined. Conclusions. The excellent patency rate during the early follow-up period confirmed that the no-touch technique is a good option for surgical revascularization.

Background and Objectives: Parinaud oculoglandular syndrome (POS) is unilateral granulomatous follicular conjunctivitis with ipsilateral afferent lymphadenopathy, primarily caused by cat-scratch disease, tularemia, and sporotrichosis. We report a case of POS in which Bartonella DNA was detected using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in corneal and conjunctival specimens. Methods: A 29-year-old man, who started keeping a stray cat two months prior, became aware of right preauricular lymphadenopathy and right ocular conjunctival hyperemia one month prior. ⋯ Results: After 2 weeks of oral treatment and 2 months of eye drop treatment, the deterioration of the cornea and conjunctiva improved when the patient recovered good visual acuity. Conclusions: PCR assays of corneal and conjunctival specimens are useful for the diagnosis of CSD presenting with POS. These results suggested that Bartonella may be directly involved in the ocular surface pathogenesis of POS.

Effects of Rhythm Step Training on Foot and Lower Limb Balance in Children and Adolescents with Flat Feet: A Radiographic Analysis.
Background and Objectives: Owing to the recent reports regarding the efficacy of rhythm step training (RST) in lower limb muscle development and motor skill enhancement, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of RST on foot and lower limb balance in children and adolescents diagnosed with flat feet using radiographic analysis. Materials and Methods: A total of 160 children and adolescents diagnosed with flat feet from a hospital in Seoul were randomly assigned to the general flat feet training (GFFT) (n = 80) or RST (n = 80) group. Patients in both groups exercised for 50 min once a week for 12 weeks. ⋯ Conclusions: RST significantly enhances foot and lower limb balance in children and adolescents with flat feet, suggesting its potential use as an effective intervention for this population. The study did not specifically analyze the effects of various components of rhythm training, such as music, exercise intensity, and frequency, on the outcomes. Further research is needed to determine how each of these elements individually influences the results.

Background and Objectives: The use of a bipolar resectoscope has become popular due to the lower risk of hyponatremia. However, gynecologists might overlook the risk of water intoxication. Water intoxication is associated with the infusion of distending fluid. ⋯ One woman in the bipolar group developed life-threatening water intoxication. Conclusions: Myoma diameter is associated with an increase in infused distending fluid volume, especially for myomas ≥4 cm. Meticulous monitoring of the infused distension fluid volume is still crucial to avoid fluid overload during bipolar hysteroscopic myomectomy.
