Background and objectives: In patients with biliary atresia (BA), hepatoportoenterostomy (HPE) is still a valuable therapeutic tool for prolonged survival or a safer transition to liver transplantation. The main focus today is towards efficient screening programs, a faster diagnostic, and prompt treatment. However, the limited information on BA pathophysiology makes valuable any experience in disease management. ⋯ The mean follow-up period was six years. Conclusions: HPE, even performed in advanced cirrhosis, allows a significant survival, and ensures an essential time gain for patients requiring liver transplantation. A younger age at surgery is correlated with a better outcome, despite early CMV infection.

Krüppel-like transcription factor 10 (KLF10) plays a vital role in regulating cell proliferation, including the anti-proliferative process, activation of apoptosis, and differentiation control. KLF10 may also act as a protective factor against oral cancer. We studied the impact of KLF10 expression on the clinical outcomes of oral cancer patients to identify its role as a prognostic factor in oral cancer. ⋯ KLF10 expression, detected by IHC staining, could be an independent prognostic marker for oral cancer patients.

Prolonged tourniquet stasis induced by venepuncture can lead to the release of the plasma of cell lysis products, as well as tissue factor (TF), impairing the quality of coagulation test results. The accidental presence of TF in vitro can trigger the coagulation mechanism, generating a false decrease in prothrombin time (PT). Background and Objectives: Identification of short PT tests below the normal reference value that could suggest a situation of hypercoagulability. ⋯ For 344 (63.24%) tests, the results suggested a situation of hypercoagulability. Conclusions: In order to guarantee the highest quality of the laboratory services, a proper interpretation and report of the patients' results must be congruent and harmoniously associated to the actual clinical condition of the patient. Duplication of the PT determination from the same sample would exclude situations of false hypercoagulability and would provide significant improvement for the patient's safety.

Background and objectives: Cytokine thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of atopic diseases such as atopic dermatitis, allergic rhinitis, and asthma. Resveratrol (RSV) exerts various pharmacological effects such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, and anticancer. Although, it has been verified the beneficial effects of RSV on various subjects, the effect of RSV on thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) regulation has not been elucidated. ⋯ RSV down-regulated nuclear factor-κB activation, IκBα phosphorylation as well as activation of receptor-interacting protein2 and caspase-1 in HMC-1 cells. In addition, RSV treatment decreased the up-regulation of intracellular calcium in HMC-1 cells. Conclusions: These results suggest that RSV might be useful for the treatment of atopic diseases through blocking of TSLP.

Supervised Rehabilitation May Lead to Better Outcome than Home-Based Rehabilitation Up to 1 Year after Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction.
Background and objectives: Previous studies consistently found no significant difference between supervised and home-based rehabilitation after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). However, the function of the nonoperative knee, hamstring strength at deep flexion, and neuromuscular control have been overlooked. This prospective observational study was performed to investigate the outcomes after ACLR in operative and nonoperative knees between supervised and home-based rehabilitations. ⋯ At 1 year, the supervised rehabilitation group also demonstrated faster AT of the hamstrings (operative knees, p = 0.016; nonoperative knees, p = 0.036). Lysholm scores gradually improved in both groups over 1 year; however, the supervised rehabilitation group showed higher scores at 1 year (87.3 ± 5.8 vs. 75.6 ± 15.1, p = 0.016). Conclusions: This study demonstrated that supervised rehabilitation may offer additional benefits in improving muscle strength, neuromuscular control, and patient-reported knee function compared with home-based rehabilitation up to 1 year after ACLR.
