Background and objectives: The aims of this study were to investigate changes in the hemodynamics associated with different types of aortic prostheses and to evaluate patient-prosthesis mismatch (PPM) at rest and after exercise. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 150 patients who presented with indications for aortic valve replacement (AVR) with/without concomitant surgery from March 2019 to January 2020. The study population included 90 (60%) men and 60 (40%) women (mean age, 67.33 ± 10.22 years; range, 37-88 years). ⋯ However, the stented group showed more pronounced changes in EOA and iEOA after exercise, whereas the changes in the mechanical valve group did not reach significance. Conclusions: In the early postoperative period, mechanical valves and stented valves showed favorable resting hemodynamics. The PPM rate measured after exercise was lower than that at rest.

Background and objectives: Cerebral palsy (CP) is the most frequent childhood motor disability. Achieving ambulation or standing in children with CP has been a major goal of physical therapy. Recently, robot-assisted gait training using the Hybrid Assistive Limb® (HAL) has been effective in improving walking ability in patients with CP. ⋯ Two-dimensional gait analysis showed improvement in equinus gait, increase in the flexion angle of the swing phase in the knee and hip joints, and improvement in gait symmetry. Immediate improvements in the walking ability and gait pattern were noted after HAL training in patients with spastic CP. Conclusions: The symmetry of the joint angle of the lower limb, including the trunk, accounts for the improvement in walking ability after HAL therapy.

The need to evaluate the condylar remodeling after orthognathic surgery, using three-dimensional (3D) images and volume rendering techniques in skeletal Class III patients has been emphasized. The study examined condylar positional, structural, and volumetric changes after bimaxillary or single-jaw maxillary orthognathic surgeries in skeletal Class III patients using the cone-beam computed tomography. ⋯ At one year after orthognathic surgery, there were no significant changes in positional, structural, or volumetric statuses of condyles.

The demand of platelet transfusions is steadily growing worldwide, inter-donor variation, donor dependency, or storability/viability being the main contributing factors to the current global, donor-dependent platelet concentrate shortage concern. In vitro platelet production has been proposed as a plausible alternative to cover, at least partially, the increasing demand. However, in practice, such a logical production strategy does not lack complexity, and hence, efforts are focused internationally on developing large scale industrial methods and technologies to provide efficient, viable, and functional platelet production. ⋯ In this review, we cover the evolution around the in vitro culture and differentiation of megakaryocytes into platelets, the progress made thus far to bring the culture concept from basic research towards good manufacturing practices certified production, and subsequent clinical trial studies. However, little is known about how these in vitro products should be stored or whether any safety measure should be implemented (e.g., pathogen reduction technology), as well as their quality assessment (how to isolate platelets from the rest of the culture cells, debris, microvesicles, or what their molecular and functional profile is). Importantly, we highlight how the scientific community has overcome the old dogmas and how the new perspectives influence the future of platelet-based therapy for transfusion purposes.

Revisiting One of the Dreaded Outcomes of the Current Pandemic: Pulmonary Embolism in COVID-19.
Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a commonly encountered clinical entity in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Up to 1/3 of patients have been found to have PE in the setting of COVID-19. ⋯ Ongoing research and publications of the scientific literature have helped in dealing with COVID-19 lately and this applies to PE as well. In this article, we attempt to succinctly yet comprehensively discuss PE in patients with COVID-19 with a review of the prevailing literature.
