Background and objectives: Duodenal lymphocytosis (DL) is a condition characterized by enhanced infiltration of intraepithelial lymphocytes (IELs) in the duodenal mucosa, and it can be linked to both gluten- and non-gluten-related diseases, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Materials and methods: We retrospectively selected patients with DL linked to IBS. Formalin-embedded biopsy samples of the duodenum were collected. ⋯ A significant, direct correlation between IELs and duodenal expression of IFNγ was found (r = 0.36, p = 0.04). Conclusions: IBS with DL showed higher expression of inflammatory markers than controls, but DQ2-8 haplotype did not seem to affect their expression. Smoking might increase IELs infiltration.

Background and objectives: We aimed to analyze factors associated with the period of viral shedding in patients with confirmed COVID-19 who experienced only mild symptoms. Materials and methods: We conducted a multicenter retrospective study from three community treatment centers (CTCs) of South Korea. All patients included were admitted to the three centers before 31 March 2020. ⋯ In the multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression analysis, the existence of underlying comorbidities lowered the probability of the termination of viral shedding (HR = 0.561, 95% CI 0.388-0.812). Female sex and presence of COVID-19-associated symptoms also lowered the probability, but the significance was marginal. Conclusions: The existence of underlying comorbidities was associated with delayed termination of viral shedding in COVID-19 patients with mild severity.

The last century brought about more rapid new developments in the treatment of burns, which significantly lowered the mortality of burn injuries. However, burns were already treated in antiquity, where the threshold from spirituality to scientific medicine originated. The existing literature on burn treatment is very limited and there are many cross-references, some of them incorrect. ⋯ The care of patients using analgetics and the therapy of burn shock arose from the literature. The ancient world is considered to be the foundation of medicine, but it is believed to have been based mainly on shamanism rather than science. However, already more than two millennia ago, burns were correctly assessed and treated according to today's scientific standards and scientific relationships were recognized.

Background and Objectives: The proximity of the popliteal vessels in the distal femur may increase the risk of iatrogenic vascular injury during cerclage wiring. In this study, the closest location and distance of the popliteal vessels to the femur was examined using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The associations between anthropometric factors and the distance that would guide the placement of wires safely during surgery were also identified. ⋯ Linear regression demonstrated a strong positive linear correlation between the thigh circumference and the d-H and between the femoral length and the d-V (Pearson's r = 0.891 and 0.806, respectively (p < 0.001)). Conclusions: The closet location and distance of the popliteal vessels to the femur provide useful information for wire placement during distal femoral fracture surgery while minimising the risk of vascular injury. Given that patients with a smaller thigh circumference and a shorter femoral length are more likely to have a smaller d-H and a shorter d-V, respectively, cautious measures should be taken in such cases.

Background and Objectives: Stroke survivors face severe problems affecting their mobility, such as balance impairments and an increased risk of falls. The principal aim of this study was to quantify the effects of 12 sessions of Halliwick aquatic therapy for the treatment of balance in patients with chronic stroke. Materials and Methods: Twenty-nine people with stroke participated in this single-group experimental pilot study. ⋯ However, in the case of values within the limits of stability, such as forward (F = 0.339, p = 0.676), backward (F = 0.449, p = 0.644), forward right oscillations (F = 1.637, p = 0.21), and the anterior/posterior instability index (F = 0.614, p = 0.55), no significant differences were found. Conclusions: These findings suggest that Halliwick therapy may potentially improve stroke balance impairments. The main limitations of the study were the sample size, the lack of a control group, and the study not being blind.
