Background and Objectives: Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), mean platelet volume (MPV), and other components of the routine complete blood count (CBC) were found to be sensitive biomarkers of preeclampsia and other inflammatory obstetric conditions in previous studies, with conflicting results. We speculated that the same associations existed with hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelets (HELLP) syndrome in the first trimester of pregnancy. Materials and Methods: We conducted a retrospective case-control study at a tertiary care hospital in NY (USA), in the time frame between January 2016 and December 2018. ⋯ Conclusions: In our study NLR, PLR, and other CBC components did not predict HELLP syndrome. We speculate that HELLP syndrome has a sudden increase of tissue inflammation in the third trimester that is not manifested during the early phases of placentation. Larger studies are needed to evaluate the true ability of NLR, PLR, and CBC components to predict HELLP syndrome in the first trimester.

Evaluation of the Salivary Level of Cortisol in Patients with Oral Lichen Planus: A Meta-Analysis.
Background and objective: Cortisol, as the main human glucocorticoid, is considered to be a biological marker of stress and anxiety. Since it is known that oral lichen planus (OLP) can appear and worsen during stressful events, cortisol levels have been previously studied in OLP patients. The present meta-analysis aims to assess the salivary concentration of cortisol in OLP patients compared to healthy controls. ⋯ In Indian-based population studies, a significant difference in the salivary cortisol levels in OLP patients compared with controls was detected (MD = 5.62 ng/mL; 95% CI: 2.67, 8.56; P = 0.0002). In addition, a significant difference in the salivary cortisol levels in the OLP patients compared with the controls was obtained in studies performed with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method (MD = 5.33 ng/mL; 95% CI: 2.72, 7.93; P < 0.0001). Conclusion: We suggest that supportive psychological treatment together with the conventional therapy could increase patients' capability to prevent stress, anxiety, and depression.

Background and Objectives: Pregnancy is a unique period in the life of every woman. The lifestyle of a pregnant woman has a significant impact on her and her child's health. Regular physical activity is one of the elements that help maintain normal mental and physical well-being. ⋯ On the basis of an analysis of titles, abstracts and the language of publication (other than English), 354 articles were rejected, and 54 articles were fully read, of which five were rejected due to lack of access to the full version. Finally, 17 references were included in the review. Conclusions: Physical activity, at least once a week, significantly reduces the symptoms of depression in pregnant women and may be an important factor in the prevention of depression in this period.

Background and objective: Portal vein thrombosis is associated with a decrease in the main blood velocity in this vessel. While most studies examine etiological factors of portal vein thrombosis after its occurrence, we aimed to evaluate portal vessels and assess whether mild acute pancreatitis affects blood flow in the portal vein and increases the risk of thrombosis. Materials and methods: This prospective single centered follow-up study enrolled 66 adult participants. ⋯ Changes in venous blood velocities were not significant during the follow-up period in separate study groups. Conclusions: Portal blood flow velocities do not change during mild acute pancreatitis in the inflammatory and postinflammatory periods. This observation suggests that mild acute pancreatitis does not increase the risk of portal vein thrombosis.

The risks of systemic anti-coagulation or its reversal are well known but accepted as necessary under certain circumstances. However, particularly in the plastic surgical patient, systemic alteration to hemostasis is often unnecessary when local therapy could provide the needed adjustments. ⋯ The main challenge to the advancement of local therapy is drug delivery. However, with increasingly promising innovations underway, the field will hopefully expand to the betterment of patient care.
