The literature lacks data about the evaluation of throat-related symptoms proving chronic tonsillitis as the most common indication for adult tonsillectomy. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the most important throat-related symptoms suggestive of chronic tonsillitis in adults. ⋯ Tonsillar cryptic debris and enlarged regional lymph nodes along with recurrent tonsillitis could support the diagnosis of chronic tonsillitis in adults when considering tonsillectomy.

It is well known that cardiomyocyte apoptosis contributes to ischemic heart damage. There is also increasing evidence that the polyphenolic compounds of natural origin, such as anthocyanins, may attenuate ischemia/reperfusion injury though the mechanisms of such protection are not clear. Following our previous studies showing the effect of certain anthocyanins on cytochrome c redox state, mitochondrial functions, and ischemia-induced caspase activation in the heart, here we investigated whether these anthocyanins can rescue cardiac cells from death by the mechanism involving the reduction of cytosolic cytochrome c. ⋯ Cy3G protected the rat heart from ischemia/reperfusion-induced apoptosis and necrosis; meanwhile, Pg3G did not exert any protective effect. The protective effect of Cy3G may be related due to its high capacity to reduce cytosolic cytochrome c.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE. In this study, we attempted to determine whether the C/T polymorphism of the ET-1 gene was significantly associated with changes in several clinical characteristics after the 16-week combined exercise program in overweight middle-aged women. MATERIAL AND METHODS. ⋯ In addition, this genetic variation showed a significant association with changes in muscular strength of the participants after the 16-week combined exercise program (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS. Our data suggest that the C/T substitution on intron 4 of the ET-1 gene may be a useful genetic marker influencing muscular strength through a gene-exercise interaction and is associated with an interindividual difference of cardiovascular risk factors and parameters of physical fitness.

The aim of our study was to determine if the genotype of the matrix metalloproteinase-3 (MMP-3) gene might carry the risk of age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) in patients with myocardial infarction. ⋯ MMP-3 gene polymorphism had no predominant effect on the development of ARMD in patients with myocardial infarction.

The inherited macular dystrophies are characterized by different grade central visual loss and different character macula atrophy, because of retinal pigment epithelium lesion. The cause of photoreceptors degeneration is still not known. ⋯ It is known seven gene mutations (ABCA4, ELOVL4, PROML1, VMD2, Peripherin/RDS, TIMP3, XLRS), which may cause inherited macular dystrophies development. Inheritance type of inherited macular dystrophies, prevalence, beginning of disease, spread of the disease between female and male, clinic, electroretinography, electrooculography, differential diagnosis, genetic research and prognosis are also reviewed.
