Case ReportsHERBALIFE® ASSOCIATED SEVERE HEPATOTOXICITY IN A PREVIOUSLY HEALTHY WOMAN.
Lately there has been an increased consumption of herbal preparations, distributed as nutritional supplements, often claimed to be 'natural' and harmless. However, as their use is not subjected to strict pre-marketing testing and regulations, their ingredients are not clearly defined and there is no quality control or proof of their effectiveness and safety. A growing body of references accentuate their harmful effects, in particular hepatotoxicity, which varies from minimal hepatogram changes to fulminant hepatitis requiring liver transplantation. ⋯ The exact mechanism of liver damage in our patient was not determined. After removing the Herbalife® products, liver damage resolved and there was no need to perform liver biopsy. Taking into consideration the growing consumption of herbal products and their potential harmfulness, we consider that more strict regulations of their production process and sale are necessary, including exact identification of active substances with a list of ingredients, toxicologic testing and obligatory side effect report.

ESTABLISHMENT OF THE BONE TISSUE BANK AT MOSTAR UNIVERSITY CLINICAL HOSPITAL.
Bone tissue banks are necessary for collection, production, testing, packaging, storage and delivery of bone transplants. Bone tissue bank is a link between the donor and the recipient by which the donation becomes a medium of health improvement for both the donor and the recipient. At the Department of Orthopedics, Mostar University Clinical Hospital, about 200 total hip replacements are performed per year. ⋯ In the same Department, around 50 procedures that require bone transplants are performed per year. A team of highly competent surgeons are working on an intensive process of adaptation oriented to quality improvement and intensification of the activity, both with the goal of meeting the standards of excellence in orthopedic surgery. The presence of a bone tissue bank has a favorable impact on the quality of health care owing to bone transplant availability, as well as on the scientific role of a highly specialized institution that examines the properties of bone tissue.

Case ReportsSUBCONJUNCTIVAL FRAGMENTATION OF A PREVIOUSLY EFFICIENT XEN GEL STENT IMPLANTATION AND SUCCESSFUL BLEB FORMATION: A CASE REPORT.
The XEN gel stent is one of the available minimally invasive glaucoma surgery devices, a new generation implant, which is designed to reduce intraocular pressure in patients with primary open angle glaucoma if past medical treatments have failed. This report presents a case of subconjunctival fragmentation of the XEN gel stent after a three-month follow-up of successful XEN gel implantation. A 70-year-old male patient was treated for primary open angle glaucoma. ⋯ Three months after the surgery, at a regular follow-up visit, three fragments of the subconjunctival part of the XEN gel implant were found in his left eye. Neither serious complications nor intraocular pressure increase were detected. A new potential complication of the XEN gel implant is described.

INADEQUACY OF VITAMIN K ANTAGONIST USE IN PATIENTS WITH ATRIAL FIBRILLATION - OVERVIEW OF EVERYDAY CLINICAL PRACTICE AT THE MERKUR UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL IN ZAGREB, CROATIA.
Atrial fibrillation is the most common cardiac arrhythmia. It increases the risk of death and thromboembolic events. Vitamin K antagonists reduce these risks. ⋯ Only 34 (31.2%) patients aged over 75 had been receiving vitamin K antagonist therapy and 6 (17.6%) had the International Normalized Ratio values within the proposed therapeutic interval. We found a significantly higher rate of anticoagulant therapy introduction in patients under 75 years (p=0.03), but there were no significant differences in the adequacy of anticoagulant therapy (p=0.89) between these two populations. Our results showed clear inadequacies of vitamin K antagonist treatment with a growing need for a wider use of novel oral anticoagulants.

Comparative StudyEVALUATION OF INNOVATIVE DIGITALLY CONTROLLED ER:YAG LASER IN SURGICAL TREATMENT OF ORAL LEUKOPLAKIA - A PRELIMINARY STUDY.
The use of lasers for treatment of oral leukoplakia has gained a lot of interest in the past years, however, data on the use of Er:YAG laser are scarce. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of Er:YAG laser and 1% topical isotretinoin in the treatment of 27 oral leukoplakia patients. Er:YAG laser (LightWalker AT, Fotona, Slovenia) was used in 27 patients with 27 leukoplakia lesions. ⋯ At follow-up after six months and one year, there was no recurrence of lesions. Er:YAG laser is a successful treatment for oral leukoplakia. Topical isotretionin treatment is unsuccessful in patients with oral leukoplakia.
