During maintenance proton pump inhibitor (PPI) therapy, patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) sometimes complain of upper gastrointestinal symptoms. ⋯ During maintenance PPI therapy, upper gastrointestinal symptoms were more severe in NERD patients than in patients with erosive GERD. NERD patients often wished to change their PPI therapy, but this was not dependent on the severity of their upper GI symptoms.
