Short- and long-term effects of continuous versus intermittent restrictive diet approaches on body composition and the metabolic profile in overweight and obese postmenopausal women: a pilot study.
The objective of this study was to compare changes in body composition and the metabolic profile between women taking an intermittent diet (ID) and women taking a continuous diet (CD). ⋯ The ID resulted in similar short- and long-term changes in body composition and metabolic profile compared with a CD. Most improvements occurred during the first 5 weeks of treatment in both interventions.

Formononetin (Formo) prevents ovariectomy (Ovx)-induced bone loss in rats. However, there are no reports on the curative effects of Formo. The objective of this study was to investigate the ability of Formo in restoring trabecular microarchitecture and promoting new bone formation in osteopenic rats. ⋯ Daily oral administration of Formo for 12 weeks has a substantial anabolic effect, thus raising the possibility of its use in postmenopausal osteoporosis.

Glucosamine (GlcN) is a popular nutritional supplement used to treat osteoarthritis in postmenopausal women. Postmenopausal women are at higher risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome because of ovarian hormone deficiency. We used ovariectomized (OVX) rats as the model to investigate whether GlcN would induce insulin resistance (IR) in OVX rats and the underlying mechanisms. ⋯ The results demonstrate that female rats do not develop IR upon GlcN treatment except after ovariectomy. Those who take GlcN after menopause or bilateral oophorectomy should watch their blood glucose level closely, especially after meals.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of endometrial premalignant and malignant polyps in premenopausal and postmenopausal women, as well as the clinical, ultrasound, and hysteroscopic factors associated with malignancy. ⋯ The prevalence rate of malignancy in endometrial polyps was higher in women with postmenopausal bleeding and advanced age.

Effect of valerian on sleep quality in postmenopausal women: a randomized placebo-controlled clinical trial.
Sleep disturbances reduce the quality of life. About 50% of postmenopausal women experience sleep disturbances such as insomnia. Complementary and alternative medical therapies may be useful for the management of sleep disturbances among postmenopausal women. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of valerian extract taken nightly on the improvement of sleep quality in postmenopausal women experiencing insomnia. ⋯ Valerian improves the quality of sleep in women with menopause who are experiencing insomnia. Findings from this study add support to the reported effectiveness of valerian in the clinical management of insomnia.
