Development of a cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor devoid of ABC transporter-dependent drug resistance.
Cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs) control cell cycle progression, RNA transcription and apoptosis, making them attractive targets for anticancer drug development. Unfortunately, CDK inhibitors developed to date have demonstrated variable efficacy. ⋯ We identified a promising pyrazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine compound devoid of ABC transporter interaction, highly suitable for further preclinical and clinical evaluation for the treatment of cancer.

Aurora kinase A (AURKA) expression in colorectal cancer liver metastasis is associated with poor prognosis.
Five-year survival after resection of colorectal cancer liver metastasis (CRLCM) is <30%. We recently found that aurora kinase A (AURKA) drives 20q gain-associated tumour progression and is associated with disease recurrence. This study evaluates the prognostic value of AURKA expression in CRCLM of patients who underwent liver resection. ⋯ The expression of AURKA protein is a molecular biomarker with prognostic value for patients with CRCLM, independent of established clinicopathological variables.

Re-attendance after false-positive screening mammography: a population-based study in the Netherlands.
In the current study, mammography adherence of women who had experienced a false-positive referral is evaluated, with emphasis on the probability of receiving surveillance mammography outside the national screening programme. ⋯ Overall screening adherence after previous false-positive referral was comparable to the re-attendance rate of women with a negative screen at 2-year follow-up. Overall adherence decreased 4 years after previous false-positive referral from 94.6% to 85.2%, with a relatively high estimate of women who continue with clinical surveillance mammography (20.8%). Women with false-positive screens should be made aware of the importance to re-attend future screening rounds, as a way to improve the effectiveness of the screening programme.

Prognosis in HIV-infected patients with non-small cell lung cancer.
We conducted a population-based study to evaluate whether non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) prognosis was worse in HIV-infected compared with HIV-uninfected patients. ⋯ NSCLC patients with HIV have a poorer prognosis than patients without evidence of HIV. NSCLC may exhibit more aggressive behaviour in the setting of HIV.

Low-dose aspirin use and cancer characteristics: a population-based cohort study.
Long-term daily use of aspirin has been associated with reduced cancer mortality. To explore this association, we compared tumour TNM characteristics among aspirin users with those among non-users. ⋯ Use of low-dose aspirin in the year prior to diagnosis was found to be associated with lower tumour extent and fewer metastatic disease for colorectal and lung cancers. For these cancers, the benefit of aspirin use appears to be during both early and late cancer progression.
