Pyrus ussuriensis Maxim. has been reported to treat the fever, cough, asthma, and chronic skin disease in Korean Medicine. However, there is no scientific evidence for the use of Pyrus ussuriensis Maxim. Leaves (PUL) extract or its mechanism of action in atopic dermatitis (AD). This study was performed to find the potential therapeutic effects of PUL on the progression of AD using in vitro and in vivo experimental models. ⋯ Our studies indicate that PUL ameliorates atopic dermatitis-like symptoms by suppressing the proinflammatory cytokines and immune stimuli in both in vitro and in vivo animal models. Therefore, these data suggest that PUL might be an effective natural resource for the treatment of AD.

The effect of a garlic supplement on the pro-inflammatory adipocytokines, resistin and tumor necrosis factor-alpha, and on pain severity, in overweight or obese women with knee osteoarthritis.
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a prevalent degenerative joint disease, which is associated with chronic and disabling pain. The adipocytokines, resistin and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), might play a role in OA pathogenesis and outcomes. ⋯ The findings suggest that garlic supplementation for 12 weeks might reduce pain severity in overweight or obese women with knee OA, which may, at least in part, be mediated via a reduction in the pro-inflammatory adipocytokine, resistin.

Trypanosomiasis belongs to the neglected tropical diseases. Although standard therapies are available, the safety and efficacy of current synthetic drugs are limited due to the development of drug resistance and adverse side effects. ⋯ There are numerous results reporting on the anti-trypanosomal activity the genus Artemisia, artemisinin and its derivatives and other phytochemicals from Artemisia species. This field of research is, however, still in its infancy and more intensive research is required to explore the full potential of diverse Artemisia species and their chemical ingredients for eradication of trypanosomal infections.

Current quality control methods for traditional Chinese patent medicines (TCPMs), e.g., microscopy, thin-layer chromatography (TLC), and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), cannot detect herbal species composition with adequate precision. To address this issue, more effective detection methods should be explored. ⋯ The results highlight that shotgun metagenomic sequencing is a complementary method for the precise species detection of TCPMs.

The quality of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) forms the foundation of its clinical efficacy. The standardization of TCM is the most important task of TCM modernization. In recent years, there has been great progress in the quality control of TCM. However, there are still many issues related to the current quality standards, and it is difficult to objectively evaluate and effectively control the quality of TCM. ⋯ The concept of Q-markers focused on unique CMM differences, dynamic changes and their transmission and traceability to establish an overall quality control and traceability system. Based on the basic attributes, an integration model and artificial intelligence research path was proposed, with the hope of providing new ideas and perspectives for the TCM quality management.
