Reproducibility and validity of lung density measures from cardiac CT Scans--The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) Lung Study.
Cardiac computed tomographic (CT) scans for the assessment of coronary calcium scores include approximately 70% of the lung volume and may be useful for the quantitative assessment of emphysema. The reproducibility of lung density measures from cardiac computed tomography and their validity compared to lung density measures from full-lung scans is unknown. ⋯ Although full-lung imaging is preferred for the quantification of emphysema, the lung imaging from paired cardiac computed tomography provided a reproducible and valid quantitative assessment of emphysema in a population-based sample.

Whole-body magnetic resonance angiography (WB-MRA) at 3 T with body coil acquisition has not previously been investigated. In this study, WB-MRA was performed in this manner using the blood pool contrast agent gadofosveset trisodium. ⋯ WB-MRA at 3 T with body coil acquisition in patients with peripheral arterial disease showed good reproducibility but only moderate to good agreement with DSA. Further assessment of the method's clinical application is warranted.

The aim of this study was to prospectively investigate the diagnostic value of triple rule-out computed tomography (CT) in patients suspected of having acute pulmonary embolism (PE). ⋯ Triple rule-out CT is feasible in patients with suspicion of PE, reveals a wide range of vascular and non-vascular chest disease, and offers an excellent overall diagnostic performance.

Comparison of digital radiographs with film radiographs for the classification of pneumoconiosis.
Digital chest imaging has replaced film chest radiographs in many centers, but the International Labour Organization classification system, which is the most widely used system for recognition and classification of dust-related abnormalities, is predicated on film chest radiographs. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the equivalency of digital chest radiographs (including both hard copy and soft copy) with film radiographs for the recognition and quantification of abnormalities consistent with pneumoconiosis using the International Labour Organization classification system. ⋯ Film and soft copy images can be recommended for the recognition and classification of dust-related parenchymal abnormalities using International Labour Organization classifications. The role of digital radiography in reading for pleural abnormalities requires additional investigation.

Progression of emphysema in a 12-month hyperpolarized 3He-MRI study: lacunarity analysis provided a more sensitive measure than standard ADC analysis.
Inhaled hyperpolarized (3)He magnetic resonance (MR) imaging has been used to measure alveolar size in patients with emphysema. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that (3)He MR images could be used to develop a biomarker of emphysema progression. ⋯ The mean ADC calculated from MR images of the lungs with helium was not sufficiently sensitive to detect changes over a 12-month period. However, lacunarity captured more of the spatial information in the images and detected emphysema progress in the smokers.
