To investigate the incidence and risk factors for trauma-induced coagulopathy (TIC) and the impact of TIC on outcomes of patients with severe trauma admitted to an emergency intensive care unit. ⋯ The incidence of TIC is particularly high among patients with severe trauma. TIC is associated with increased ISS, brain injury, shock and hypothermia, and mortality.

The Fliker, the new version of the foot-propelled scooter, has emerged as an increasingly popular recreational activity for children. This increase in popularity has led to a number of attendances to our tertiary paediatric emergency department (ED) with Fliker-associated injuries. The aim of this study was to examine the incidence and type of such injuries. ⋯ The Fliker is one of a number of fad recreational activities to have emerged in recent times. Similar to some of its predecessors (e.g. Heelys, rollerblades), it is associated with a spectrum of injuries in children.

Self-perception of knowledge and confidence in performing basic life support among medical students.
Before implementing new workshops and teaching in our faculty for performing basic life support (BLS), we aimed to determine the level of self-confidence of medical students with regard to the management of cardiac arrest (CA). ⋯ Self-perception of qualification in BLS is poor in our faculty. In our study, personal witnessing of CA greatly influenced confidence, whereas level of study did not.
