A well-known effect size (ES) indicator is Cohen's d. Cohen defined d measures of small, medium, and large ES as 0.2, 0.5, and 0.8, respectively. This approach has been criticized because practical and clinical importance depends on the context of research. ⋯ Determination of ES during the planning phase of studies requires thorough evaluation of specific clinical cases. Our results are divergent from the classic Cohen's d values. Additionally, duration of treatment affects ES perception.

Serum cortisol concentration and COVID-19 severity: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
The novel COVID-19 outbreak is a major health threat to human beings with multiorgan injuries. However, its endocrine system manifestations are much less studied. In this study, we aimed to reassess the available findings on the association between cortisol level and severity of COVID-19 infection. ⋯ Meta-regression illustrated a significant correlation between cortisol levels with sex. The serum cortisol level seems to be higher in patients with severe COVID-19 infection. This finding could be helpful to detect patients with poor prognosis at early stages of the disease, although age and sex may modify this level.

Hepatitis E virus infection in hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
Although most patients with hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection are asymptomatic or have mild symptoms, its infection is generally underdiagnosed and overlooked. In immunocompromised patients, HEV infection can lead to acute liver failure and death. However, the clinical evidence of HEV infection in hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) recipients is scarce; thus, we conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the prevalence of HEV infection in this population. ⋯ Age and male gender were not associated with HEV-RNA or HEV-IgG positivity in the meta-regression analysis. In conclusion, the prevalence of HEV-IgG in HSCT recipients was about 10%, while the prevalence of HEV-RNA was only 3%. However, further studies that focus on the clinical outcomes in this population are warranted.

The evaluation criteria for dosage of low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) for pregnant women at high risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) remain unclear. A retrospective study was performed to investigate the relative appropriate LMWH administration strategy and dosage for pregnant women at risk of VTE. 219 pregnant women with perinatal and postpartum VTE were reviewed and divided into group A (fixed dose group: n=73, 5000 IU dalteparin daily for all women), group B (weight group: n=73, 2500 IU dalteparin daily for women less than 50 kg; 5000 IU dalteparin daily for women more than 50 kg), and group C (anti-factor Xa (FXa) + weight group: n=73, 5000 IU once daily for women less than 50 kg; 7500 IU once daily for women weighing 50-80 kg; 10,000 IU once daily for women weighing over 80 kg). ⋯ Adjusting the dosage of LMWH according to both weight and anti-FXa level of pregnant women not only prevented VTE but also reduced the risk of postpartum hemorrhage induced by LMWH administration. In addition, adjusting the dose of LMWH according to anti-FXa level and body weight also affected the recurrence of VTE and the occurrence of postpartum hemorrhage in pregnant women.

Although magnesium intake is inversely associated with the risk of metabolic abnormalities, whether magnesium intake plays a role on metabolically healthy obese (MHO) phenotype has not been explored. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine whether the magnesium intake is associated with the MHO phenotype. Apparently, healthy women and men aged 20-65 years with obesity were enrolled in a cross-sectional study. ⋯ The proportion of individuals with high blood pressure (40.7% vs 5.6%, p<0.001), hyperglycemia (69.1% vs 16.9%, p<0.001), hypertriglyceridemia (84.6% vs 36.3%, p<0.001), and low HDL-C (51.2% vs 12.9%, p<0.001) was significantly higher in the MUO individuals as compared with individuals in the MHO group. The logistic regression analysis adjusted by sex and age showed that dietary magnesium intake is significantly associated with the MHO phenotype (OR=1.17; 95% CI 1.07 to 1.25, p=0.005). Our results show that magnesium intake is significantly associated with the MHO phenotype.
