Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical TrialRandomised controlled trial of colloid or crystalloid in hypotensive preterm infants.
To compare the efficacy of a colloid (5% albumin) and a crystalloid (isotonic saline) solution for treating hypotension in mechanically ventilated preterm infants. ⋯ Isotonic saline is as effective as 5% albumin for treating hypotension in preterm infants, and it has the additional advantage of causing less fluid retention in the first 48 hours.

Use of neonatal intensive care unit as a safe place for neonatal surgery.
To evaluate the advantages, disadvantages, and short term morbidity and mortality of major surgical interventions performed in the neonatal intensive care unit. ⋯ The neonatal intensive care unit is suitable for major surgery during the neonatal period and no special area is needed to perform complication free surgery.

Association between blood lactate and acid-base status and mortality in ventilated babies.
To investigate the relation between common acid-base parameters and blood lactate concentrations and their prognostic importance in sick, ventilated neonates. ⋯ Contrary to popular belief, pH or base excess cannot be used as proxy measures for blood lactate concentration, and independent measurement of the latter are needed. Blood lactate concentrations may provide an early warning signal and important prognostic information in ill, ventilated neonates. In this regard, serial measurements of blood lactate are more useful than a single value.
