Randomized Controlled TrialCost-minimization analysis of two fluid products for resuscitation of critically injured trauma patients.
Results of a study to determine potential cost benefits of substituting an alternative electrolyte solution for 0.9% sodium chloride injection for the initial fluid resuscitation of trauma patients are presented. ⋯ Substitution of Plasma-Lyte A for 0.9% sodium chloride injection for fluid resuscitation during the first 24 hours after traumatic injury was associated with decreased magnesium replacement requirements and a net cost benefit to the institution.

ReviewAdditives to local anesthetics for peripheral nerve blocks: Evidence, limitations, and recommendations.
The therapeutic rationale, clinical effectiveness, and potential adverse effects of medications used in combination with local anesthetics for peripheral nerve block therapy are reviewed. ⋯ Some additives to local anesthetics can hasten the onset of nerve block, prolong block duration, or reduce toxicity. On the other hand, poorly selected or unnecessary additives may not have the desired effect and may even expose patients to unnecessary risks.

A case of eosinophilic pneumonia in a patient receiving ceftaroline for the treatment of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) pneumonia is reported. ⋯ A patient with risk factors for respiratory disease developed eosinophilic pneumonia after receiving ceftaroline for the treatment of MRSA pneumonia. Eosinophilia resolved after ceftaroline was discontinued and i.v. methylprednisolone was initiated.
