Prevalence and risk factors of sleep bruxism and wake-time tooth clenching in a 7- to 17-yr-old population.
Sleep-related bruxism (SB) and wake-time tooth clenching (TC) have been associated with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), headache, and sleep and behavioral complaints. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and risk factors of these signs and symptoms in a 7- to 17-yr-old population (n = 604) seeking orthodontic treatment. Data were collected by questionnaire and by a clinical examination assessing craniofacial morphology and dental status. ⋯ Compared with controls, TC subjects reported more temporomandibular joint clicking (AOR = 5), jaw muscle fatigue (AOR = 13.5), and several sleep and behavioral complaints. Sleep- and wake-time parafunctions are frequently associated with signs and symptoms suggestive of TMDs, and with sleep and behavioral problems. Their clinical assessment during the planning of orthodontic treatment is recommended.

Assessment of sleep parameters during contingent electrical stimulation in subjects with jaw muscle activity during sleep: a polysomnographic study.
There is emerging evidence that feedback techniques based on contingent electrical stimulation (CES) have an inhibitory effect on the electromyogram (EMG) activity of jaw-closing muscles and therefore could be useful in the management of sleep bruxism. This polysomnographic (PSG) study was designed to investigate the effect of CES on PSG parameters in subjects with self-reported bruxism. Fourteen subjects underwent a full PSG investigation in the laboratory for three consecutive nights - one night of adaptation, one night without CES, and one night with CES - in a randomized order. ⋯ The total sleep time, the number of micro-arousals per hour of sleep, the time spent in sleep stages 3 and 4 and in rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, and the number of periodic limb movements, were not influenced by CES. The number of EMG episodes per hour of sleep during the nights with and without CES was not significantly different. The present study suggests that CES at non-painful intensities does not cause major arousal responses in any of the sleep parameters assessed in this study.

Biological and physicochemical properties of carbon-graphite fibre-reinforced polymers intended for implant suprastructures.
The aim of this study was to determine water sorption, water solubility, dimensional change caused by water storage, residual monomers, and possible cytotoxic effects of heat-polymerized carbon-graphite fibre-reinforced composites with different fibre loadings based on methyl methacrylate/poly(methyl methacrylate) (MMA/PMMA) and the copolymer poly (vinyl chloride-co-vinyl acetate). Two different resin systems were used. Resin A contained ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) and 1,4-butanediol dimethacrylate (1,4-BDMA); the cross-linker in Resin B was diethylene glycol dimethacrylate (DEGDMA). ⋯ For all composites, the volumetric increase was below 0.01±0.005 vol%. Residual MMA monomer was equal to or below 0.68±0.05 wt% for the fibre composites. The filter diffusion test and the (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) (MTT) assay demonstrated no cytotoxicity for the carbon-graphite fibre-reinforced composites, and residual cross-linking agents and vinyl chloride were not detectable by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis.

Cerebral activations resulting from virtual dental treatment.
Pain, and anxiety of pain, for some people are serious problems in dental treatment. It is a common practical experience that even entering a dental surgery office, or the sound of a dental drill, may evoke vegetative correlates of toothache without any underlying disease. This everyday phenomenon suggests the hypothesis of a corresponding activation of pain-related brain areas by virtual dental treatment. ⋯ The brain activation pattern indicates not only affective-motivational but also sensory-discriminative pain components during virtual dental treatment in all volunteers. Volunteers with a higher level of dental anxiety showed stronger activation of SI and SII. This may be a result of their higher anticipation of pain.

Many studies in dental research are based on repeated measurements of several continuous variables. Statistical analyses of such data require advanced methods to explore the complexity of information within the data. Currently, the most frequently adopted approach is to undertake multiple univariate tests. ⋯ The aim of this article was to present a non-technical introduction to latent growth curve modelling for dental researchers. The emphasis was on conceptual understanding, rather than mathematical rigor, so path diagrams were used for visual presentations of various statistical models. When properly applied, latent growth curve modelling has great potential to give new directions for future longitudinal dental research.
