Historical ArticleHospitalization in Pediatric Diabetes: A Nationwide Analysis of all Admission Causes for Germany in 2015.
Regarding pediatric diabetes, hospital admission for acute complications of type 1 diabetes (T1D) has often been investigated, but little is known about other causes of hospitalization. This study aimed to explore the total burden of hospitalization in individuals with diabetes<20 years of age in Germany. ⋯ Hospitalization rate in pediatric diabetes in Germany remained high, especially for T2D patients, girls with T1D, and young children.

The Variation of Disulfides in the Progression of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.
The purpose of this study was to examine thiol-disulfide balance in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. ⋯ A disequilibrium between thiol-disulfide pairs occurs in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, and a gradual increase to disulfide levels may contribute to the disease's severity. Deteriorated thiol-disulfide homeostasis may be relevant to the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Tanshinone IIA Improves Painful Diabetic Neuropathy by Suppressing the Expression and Activity of Voltage-Gated Sodium Channel in Rat Dorsal Root Ganglia.
Painful diabetic neuropathy (PDN) is one of the intractable complications of diabetes mellitus, which manifest as exaggerated pain perception. Previous studies showed that Tanshinone IIA (TIIA), one of the major bioactive extracts of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge, have obvious analgesic effect on different types of pain process, and the underlying analgesic mechanisms are not fully understood. The present study combined the behavioral, electrophysiological and biochemical methods to elucidate the analgesic mechanism of TIIA, using streptozotocin (STZ)-induced PDN rat models. ⋯ Patch clamp recordings showed that the excitability of dorsal root ganglion (DRG) nociceptive neuron was increased in diabetic state, and TIIA treatment effectively recovered the subnormality, which was achieved by preventing augments of both Tetrodotoxin-sensitive (TTX-resistant) and Tetrodotoxin-sensitive (TTX-S) sodium currents. Further, the protein expressions of voltage-gated sodium channels (VGSCs) α-subunits Nav1.3, Nav1.7 and Nav1.9 increased in DRG of diabetic rats and were normalized by TIIA application. In conclusion, this study provides evidence that the TIIA attenuated PDN by effecting VGSCs activities and expressions, indicating that the TIIA could be a promising agent for PDN treatment.

Randomized Controlled TrialThe Effects of Flaxseed Oil Omega-3 Fatty Acids Supplementation on Metabolic Status of Patients with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Trial.
This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of flaxseed oil omega-3 fatty acids supplementation on metabolic status of patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). ⋯ Overall, flaxseed oil omega-3 supplementation for 12 weeks in women with PCOS had beneficial effects on insulin metabolism, mF-G scores, serum triglycerides, VLDL-cholesterol and hs-CRP levels, but did not affect hormonal and other lipid profiles, and plasma nitric oxide levels.
