Randomized Controlled TrialA randomized controlled trial on the hemostasis of femoral artery using topical hemostatic agent.
Evaluation of the effect of using a topical hemostatic agent named "ChitoHem(®)" on different factors on patients undergoing diagnostic coronary angiography. ⋯ It was exhibited ChitoHem(®) topical hemostatic powder used on treatment patients undergoing diagnostic coronary angiography was statistically superior at reducing the time to hemostasis and ambulation as well as the use of sandbags compared with manual compression in control group.

ReviewNovel oral anticoagulation in management of venous thromboembolism, atrial fibrillation, and acute coronary syndrome.
Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a major public health concern since the incidence of VTE rises substantially with age. Furthermore, the diagnosis can be elusive since patients can present differently, causing delay in diagnosis and initiation of treatment and resulting in major morbidity and mortality. In addition to accuracy and precision in diagnosis, antithrombotic therapies are the cornerstones of VTE management. ⋯ Although warfarin is effective in both treatment and prophylaxis against VTE, there are several limitations. Therefore, the novel anticoagulation therapies, including rivaroxaban, apixaban, and dabigatran etexilate, have apparent advantages over warfarin in terms of clinical efficacy and adverse effects. The objective of this review is to describe the background and clinical implications of these novel anticoagulants.

Comparative StudyAnalysis of the cutoff values in fibrin-related markers for the diagnosis of overt DIC.
Fibrin-related markers (FRMs) such as fibrin and fibrinogen degradation products (FDPs), d-dimer, and soluble fibrin monomer complex (SFMC) were prospectively evaluated in 522 patients using the overt disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) diagnostic criteria. The differences in all FRMs between the DIC group and the non-DIC group, and those between the survivors and nonsurvivors were significant in the patients with infections. ⋯ In conclusion, the adequate cutoff value is thus considered to be useful for both making a diagnosis of DIC and for predicting the outcome. Fibrin-related markers are therefore thought to be more useful for making a diagnosis of DIC based on infections than based on any other underlying disorders.

Clinical TrialSerum antibodies to the heparin/platelet factor 4 complex are an independent predictor of thrombotic complications following pediatric fontan surgery.
Antibodies to the heparin/platelet factor 4 complex (heparin/PF4) are linked to the pathogenesis of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) and to the thrombotic complications. We investigated thrombotic events during early follow-up in a pediatric cardiac surgical population to ascertain whether there is a relation between heparin/PF4 antibody concentration and post-surgical thrombotic complications. One hundred and five consecutive pediatric patients treated by Fontan surgery were studied. ⋯ Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia is a rare occurrence in pediatric cardiac surgical patients. Patients who develop antibodies to the heparin/PF4 complex have a significantly higher rate of postoperative thrombotic events than patients who lack these antibodies. Within the seropositive group, the risk of developing thrombosis increased with the plasma antibody concentration.
