The Prevalence of Vancomycin-Intermediate Staphylococcus aureus and Heterogeneous VISA Among Methicillin-Resistant Strains Isolated from Pediatric Population in a Turkish University Hospital.
There are limited data regarding the prevalence of vancomycin-intermediate Staphylococcus aureus (VISA)/heterogeneous VISA (hVISA) among pediatric population. Our objective was to determine the distribution of vancomycin and daptomycin minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) and explore the phenomenon of vancomycin MIC creep and the VISA/hVISA prevalence among the methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains belonging to pediatric population by population analysis profile-area under the curve (PAP-AUC) and Etest macromethod. Vancomycin and daptomycin susceptibilities of 94 pediatric isolates of MRSA were tested by broth microdilution (BMD) and Etest methods. ⋯ To our knowledge, this is the first study investigating the prevalence of VISA/hVISA among MRSA isolated from pediatric patients by PAP-AUC method. Based on our findings, MRSA isolates, which have vancomycin MIC of 2 μg/ml can be investigated for the presence of hVISA. In this study, daptomycin showed potent activity against all isolates and may represent a therapeutic option for MRSA infections.

Biocide Susceptibility of Staphylococcus aureus CC398 and CC30 Isolates from Pigs and Identification of the Biocide Resistance Genes, qacG and qacC.
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), in particular clonal complex (CC) 398, is increasingly found in livestock. Recently, MRSA CC30 was identified in Danish pigs. We determined the susceptibility of porcine S. aureus isolates of CC398 and CC30 to disinfectants used in pig farming (benzalkonium chloride, hydrogen peroxide, formaldehyde, sodium hypochlorite, and caustic soda). Furthermore, efflux pump activity, antimicrobial resistance profiles, hemolysis properties, and the presence of toxic shock syndrome toxin-1 (TSST-1) and Panton-Valentine Leukocidin (PVL)-encoding virulence factors were investigated. ⋯ The presence of qac genes in European porcine S. aureus isolates and in livestock-associated MRSA CC30 is for the first time described in this study. This finding is concerning as it ultimately may compromise disinfection with QACs and thereby contribute to the selection and spread of MRSA CC30.

Characteristics and Outcomes of Acinetobacter baumannii Infections in Critically Ill Patients with Cancer: A Matched Case-Control Study.
To describe the characteristics and outcomes of Acinetobacter baumannii (AB) infections in critically ill cancer patients and to evaluate the impact of AB on mortality and length of stay (LOS). ⋯ AB infections in critically ill cancer patients were independently associated with increased mortality and increased ICU LOS. Measures to improve the outcomes of critically ill cancer patients infected with AB are necessary.
