Curcumin protects against regional myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury through activation of RISK/GSK-3β and inhibition of p38 MAPK and JNK.
Curcumin, the active ingredient of turmeric (Curcuma longa), is known to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidative properties. The present study was aimed to determine the effect of curcumin in regional myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury and its underlying mechanisms involving the role of prosurvival kinases and apoptotic kinases. ⋯ Preconditioning by curcumin effectively protects against regional myocardial I/R injury through the activation of prosurvival kinases involving PI3K-Akt, ERK1/2, and GSK-3β, and attenuation of p38 and JNK.

Clinical experience with low-dose continuous infusion of furosemide in acute heart failure: assessment of efficacy and safety.
Clinical data are scarce for furosemide administered as a low-dose (<160 mg/24 hours) continuous intravenous infusion in acute heart failure (HF). Our purpose was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of low-dose continuous infusion of furosemide on diuretic response, renal function, and patient outcomes. ⋯ In patients with acute HF, furosemide administered as a low-dose continuous infusion was effective in achieving diuresis and was not associated with a detectable effect on renal function. This diuretic approach appeared to be similarly effective and safe in patients with preserved LVEF.
