Pancreatic Chymotrypsin Activity Rather Than Amylase Level Better Predicts Postoperative Pancreatic Fistula.
To assess the predictive value of chymotrypsin activity in pancreatic juice on clinically relevant postoperative pancreatic fistula (CR-POPF) after pancreatic resection, since pancreatic peptidases rather than glycolytic enzymes play a pivotal role in causing tissue damage due to pancreatic leakage. ⋯ Assessment of pancreatic chymotrypsin activity may allow for more rapid and accurate prediction of CR-POPF than use of conventional diagnostic criteria based on fluid amylase level, enabling individualized surgical procedures and postoperative drain management.

Transanal Versus Transabdominal Minimally Invasive (Completion) Proctectomy With Ileal Pouch-anal Anastomosis in Ulcerative Colitis: A Comparative Study.
This study aims to compare surgical outcome of transanal ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (ta-IPAA) with transabdominal minimal invasive approach in ulcerative colitis (UC), using the comprehensive complication index (CCI). ⋯ Ta-IPAA for UC is a safe procedure, resulting in fewer patients with morbidity, but comparable CCI when morbidity is present. Overall, ta-IPAA led to lower CCI scores.

A Propensity Score Matched Analysis of Open Versus Minimally Invasive Transthoracic Esophagectomy in the Netherlands.
The aim of this study was to compare open esophagectomy (OE) with minimally invasive esophagectomy (MIE) in a population-based setting. ⋯ This population-based study showed that mortality and pulmonary complications were similar for OE and MIE. Anastomotic leaks and reinterventions were more frequently observed after MIE. MIE was associated with a shorter hospital stay.

We aimed to prospectively evaluate NIR-C, VR-AR, and x-ray intraoperative cholangiography (IOC) during robotic cholecystectomy. ⋯ This high-tech protocol illustrates the multimodal imaging of biliary anatomy towards precision cholecystectomy. Those visualization techniques could complement to reduce the likelihood of biliary injuries (NCT01881399).

During the last decade, face allotransplantation has been shown to be a revolutionary reconstructive procedure for severe disfigurements. However, offer to patients remains limited due to lifelong immunosuppression. To move forward in the field, a new pathway in tissue engineering is proposed. ⋯ Complex acellular facial scaffolds were obtained, preserving simultaneously a cell-friendly extracellular matrix and a perfusable vascular tree. This step will enable further engineering of postmortem facial grafts, thereby offering new perspectives in composite tissue allotransplantation.
