To compare outcomes of patients using versus not using cannabis as a treatment for pain after discharge from surgery. ⋯ Patient-reported cannabis use, to treat postoperative pain, was associated with increased opioid consumption after discharge from surgery that was of clinically insignificant amounts, but worse pain and other postoperative patient-reported outcomes.

To determine long-term survival in patients undergoing robot-assisted surgery (RAS) or laparoscopic surgery (LAS) for colon cancer. ⋯ Adopting RAS for colon cancer was associated with improved recurrence-free survival. However, it did not cause a lower all-cause- or colon cancer-specific mortality.

To develop machine learning (ML) models that predict outcomes following endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). ⋯ Our newer ML models accurately predict 30-day outcomes following EVAR using preoperative data and perform better than logistic regression. Our automated algorithms can guide risk mitigation strategies for patients being considered for EVAR.

To characterize the current state of mental health within the surgical workforce in the United States. ⋯ Nearly 1 in 7 respondents reported suicidal ideation in the past year. Mental illness and suicidal ideation are significant problems among the surgical workforce in the United States.

To measure commercial price variation for cancer surgery within and across hospitals. ⋯ Commercial payer-negotiated prices for the surgical management of 10 common, solid tumor malignancies varied widely both within and across hospitals. Higher rates were observed in less competitive markets. Future efforts should facilitate price competition and limit health market concentration.
