Randomized Controlled Trial
Effect of dexamethasone on glucose homeostasis in normal and prediabetic subjects with a first-degree relative with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
To determine the effect of a single 8-mg orally administered dose of dexamethasone or placebo on glucose and insulin homeostasis, during an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) performed before and 24 hours after the administered dose. ⋯ In a study population in which all subjects had at least one first-degree relative with type 2 diabetes mellitus, those with prediabetes were more insulin resistant and had a lower disposition index than did subjects with NGT. Subjects with prediabetes also had a pronounced decrease in disposition index when challenged with a single 8-mg orally administered dose of dexamethasone.

Comparative Study
Population-based study of hypoglycemia in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus requiring emergency medical services.
To report the population burden of hypoglycemia necessitating emergency medical services (EMS) and the long-term outcomes in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) receiving different insulin treatments. ⋯ The population burden of EMS-requiring hypoglycemia in patients with T1DM is high. Medical resource utilization was similar among the 3 treatment groups. Mortality was higher in the SI group (limited by small sample size) and among patients requiring EDT and increased with advancing age. Further research could be directed toward understanding the effect of expert evaluation of high-risk patients on long-term outcomes.

Case Reports
Slipped capital femoral epiphysis in a patient with Turner syndrome receiving growth hormone therapy.
To report a case of slipped capital femoral epiphysis in a young patient with Turner syndrome (TS) receiving growth hormone therapy and to emphasize the importance of keeping this orthopedic condition in mind during management of this patient group. ⋯ Patients with TS are at high risk for developing certain orthopedic conditions, such as slipped capital femoral epiphysis. Furthermore, slipped capital femoral epiphysis is a known complication of growth hormone therapy in growing children. A limp, hip pain, knee pain, or thigh pain might be a symptom of slipped capital femoral epiphysis in patients with TS, especially those receiving growth hormone therapy. Prompt recognition and treatment of this condition are important for prevention of sequelae.

Comparative Study
Medical resource use and costs related to central precocious puberty: a retrospective cohort study.
To evaluate the economic burden of central precocious puberty (CPP) by examining direct health care resource utilization and costs. ⋯ In this study, health care resource use and costs among patients with CPP were substantial before and after the initial diagnosis of CPP.
