The relationship of the Functional Rating Index with disability, pain, and quality of life in patients with low back pain.
The study was planned to determine the relationship of the Functional Rating Index (FRI) with disability, pain, and quality of life in patients with low back pain. ⋯ Our study reveals that the FRI, as a reliable instrument in assessing functional status, is associated with the RMQ, the VAS, and all items of the SF-36 in patients with LBP. It was concluded that changes in functional status were related to changes in disability, pain, and quality of life.

Diagnostic utility of ultrasonography for respiratory distress syndrome in neonates.
Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) is the most frequent cause of respiratory failure treated in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The diagnosis is usually based on clinical manifestation and chest X-ray. The aim of the study was to investigate the possible role of chest ultrasound in the diagnosis of the RDS. ⋯ The ultrasound examination is characterized by 100% sensitivity and 92% specificity in RDS. There was a strong positive correlation between ultrasound and X-ray imaging in the description of RDS severity (tau = 0.835; p < 0.001). Ultrasound examination cannot replace chest X-ray in the respiratory failure work-up as it overestimates the diagnosis, but it can be useful in excluding RDS as a cause of respiratory insufficiency in newborns.

Comparison of remifentanil or fentanyl administration during isoflurane anesthesia for coronary artery bypass surgery.
The combination of inhalational agents with moderate doses of fentanyl is popular in cardiac anesthesia. Remifentanil is a new opioid metabolized by non-specific esterases. The aim of our study was to assess whether remifentanil may be superior to fentanyl during isoflurane anesthesia for coronary artery surgery. ⋯ Remifentanil is safe during inhalation anesthesia for coronary artery surgery and it appears to be more effective than fentanyl in blunting hemodynamic response before the initiation of cardiopulmonary bypass surgery.

Evaluating a new method for maintaining body temperature during OPCAB and robotic procedures.
We evaluated the performance of a new temperature management system (Allon Thermowrap, MTRE, Israel) in maintaining normothermia during OPCAB (Off-Pump Coronary Artery Bypass) procedures and Zeus-robotic IMA (internal mammary artery) takedowns. ⋯ The Allon Thermowrap system significantly out-performed conventional techniques in achieving and maintaining normothermia during off-pump and robotic procedures.

Spigelian hernia is a rare partial abdominal wall defect in the transversus abdominus aponeurosis or Spigelian fascia. We here report the case of a patient with incarcerated greater omentum in a Spigelian hernia. ⋯ In our case, plug and mesh repair was a safe and effective method of repairing an incarcerated Spigelian hernia with durability through three years of follow-up.
