Non-surgical treatment of Achilles rupture: Does duration in functional weight bearing orthosis matter?
The treatment of acute Achilles tendon ruptures is continually being debated. The success of non-surgical regimes is now evident yet there remains a high rate of surgery in the United States of America and Scandinavia. Recent studies have investigated functional outcome rather than complication rates as primary outcome but the current data are still sparse. We aimed to investigate whether there is any difference in functional outcomes between two dynamic regimes of differing durations for acute Achilles tendon ruptures. ⋯ A reduction in duration of dynamic rehabilitation for non-operative treatment of Achilles tendon rupture from 11 weeks to 8 weeks does not lead to a significant detriment in functional outcomes or complication rates.

The goal of this study was to evaluate the biomechanical performance of three distal fibula fracture fixation implants in a matched pair cadaveric fibula model: (1) a 5-hole compression plate with lag screw, (2) a 5-hole locking plate with lag screw, and (3) the 6-hole tabbed-plate with locking screws. ⋯ Overall, the tabbed-plate had similar construct stability and strength to the compression and locking plates. However, the distribution of load with the locking and tabbed-plates was not as heavily dependent on bone quality.

Radiofrequency microtenotomy is as effective as plantar fasciotomy in the treatment of recalcitrant plantar fasciitis.
Radiofrequency microtenotomy (RM) is effective for treating plantar fasciitis. No studies have compared it to the plantar fasciotomy (PF). We hypothesized that RM is equally effective and provides no additional benefit when performed with PF. ⋯ RM is as effective as PF in the treatment of plantar fasciitis. Patients who underwent both procedures experienced no benefit and a higher rate of complications.

Although the Foot and Ankle Outcome Score (FAOS) is commonly used in several languages for a variety of foot disorders, it has not been validated specifically for foot and ankle arthritic conditions. The aims of the present study were to translate the original English FAOS into Thai and to evaluate the validity and reliability of the Thai version of the FAOS for the foot and ankle arthritic conditions. ⋯ The Thai FAOS demonstrated sufficient levels of construct and content validity for the evaluation of foot and ankle arthritis. Although reliability was satisfactory for the major subscale ADL, it was not sufficient for the minor subscales. Our findings suggest that it can be used as a disease-specific instrument to evaluate foot and ankle arthritis and can complement other reliable outcome surveys.
