Prospective open cohort case series of consecutive patients admitted with spinal cord damage to a spinal rehabilitation unit (SRU) between 1 January 2008 and 31 July 2013. ⋯ Barriers to discharge from rehabilitation for patients with spinal cord damage are common, substantial, and represent an important opportunity for health systems improvement.

This is a retrospective analysis. ⋯ This study is partially funded by the International Foundation for Research in Paraplegia, Zurich, Switzerland.

To develop a comprehensive set of common data elements (CDEs), data definitions, case report forms and guidelines for use in spinal cord injury (SCI) clinical research, as part of the CDE project at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) of the US National Institutes of Health. ⋯ Widespread use of CDEs can facilitate SCI clinical research and trial design, data sharing and retrospective analyses. Continued international collaboration will enable consistent data collection and reporting, and will help ensure that the data elements are updated, reviewed and broadcast as additional evidence is obtained.

A case report of a female patient who sustained injury to the thoracic spinal cord as a direct result of thoracolumbar selective nerve root block. ⋯ Injury to the spinal cord is known to occur in interventions such as epidural steroid infiltrations. Over time, pain management in relation to the new and emerging interventions on spine have changed. What might not be appreciated is the awareness that such interventions may cause injury to the spinal cord with serious consequences. Despite potential occurrence, in the case reported here, the neurological and functional prognosis is good with an expert, early and appropriate management in a spinal injuries centre.
