Out of a population of 456 patients with spinal cord injuries (SCI), 130 having pain were selected after matching, based on gender, age, American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) impairment grade and level of lesion. ⋯ This study showed that SCI men and women describe their pain very similarly. However, SCI women had a higher prevalence of nociceptive pain than men and their use of opiates and non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) was greater.

Experimental laboratory investigation of the effect of anesthesia on evoked potentials in rats. ⋯ The level of ketamine/xylazine anesthesia affects evoked potentials and thus should be controlled during electrophysiological recording. Our results suggest that SEPs should be best recorded during deep anesthesia, while BMEPs and CMEPs are best recorded during intermediate and light anesthesia.

Repairing the spinal cord has for a long time been a 'holy grail' for neuroscientists. No achievement in neuroscience is more difficult to achieve, and none would have the same impact amongst the medical profession and the public. ⋯ A full repair of spinal injury still remains elusive. This review summarises progress to date, and suggests ways in which progress towards treatment of spinal injury patients might be made.
